It is heartwarming to see the efforts of this one man self funded sanctuary to help preserve the turtles. Despite being a critically endangered species since the 1970's the government of Bequia have done nothing to protect it & numbers have declined so heavily they're virtually unseen off the coast where they used to thrive. People can and do still eat them and use the shells to make jewelry and souvenirs - dont buy these! Donate to the turtle sanctuary instead. We visited in the morning & met the owner who was very informative and passionate about his work. He rears them until aged 5-6y when too big for most predators then releases them, bear in mind the turtle lifespan is upto 200 years & it's not fully grown until 40y.
