“Comfortable room: shame about the view, excellent food”

Very pleasant stay.Particularly appreciated the extensive buffet breakfasts ; evening meals good too.Room looked out on large expanse of flat roof with air-conditioning hoods and pipes, which was a shame.(And fairly noisy in the mornings.) Having booked last-minute probably affected room-availability. Having an iron and board in the room was useful. We could have done with drawers to stow clothing, as we were there for 4 nights; apart from hanging space, there were really only 3 small open shelves.

I was delighted when my husband said he had been sent a good deal at one of the Classic Hotels group (we have stayed at the Bay Tree and The Bear both of which were very good) but after reading some reviews was a bit dubious about Hatherley Manor. However I did not need to worry. Laid out in lovely grounds the building is part original country house with a modern annexe added on. As our room wasn't ready we were offered complimentary coffee in the lounge bar, although it was only minutes until we were given the keys to our room. It was on the ground floor with open views across lawns and fields. The room was average size with double bed (would have preferred a larger size) , desk, flatscreen TV, chair, tea making facilities and my only gripe was lack of air conditioning although the window could be opened. The bathroom was also newly refurbished and immaculate with usual mod cons including toiletries.
Dinner was excellent with a good choice of 2 or 3 courses and our deal included wine and coffee. The service was good and the atmosphere was quiet and pleasant even though there was small tour group in the dining room. Breakfast was also ample with cereals, fruit, continental and British breakfast choices.
It does have a large conference area and provision for weddings but we were not aware of any large parties during our stay.
All in all it was a delightful stay which definitely exceeded our expectations and would recommend it to friends and family for a break in the Cotswolds.

we stayed for 2 nights 28th and 29th july. i had checked other reviews before i booked and am always aware that when booking through a late deal you have to accept that you may get the less desirable room etc. but not in this case! stayed on 2nd floor, yes no lifts but hardly a problem and were offered help with bags, if in a group it would always be smart to ask for help if not offered! room 207 was very clean lovely size bathroom with shower that wasn't a power shower but pretty effective!! the bed was huge could have slept 4 ,with, yes sheets and blankets but they did exist before duvets and are still the choice of hospitals, poss due to ease of cleaning, who knows what bugs stay in duvets!!! we did have toiletries, and i'd guess if you get a room without and asked reception nicely they would give you some, infact the staff were the most friendly and helpful i've come across other than when in usa!!! but oh my we'd paid extra £10 each for breakfast (cost on day £14.95) which i wondered if a little expensive but the choice of pastries, cereal, cooked breakfast, fruit juices and continental meats/ cheeses & fresh fruit were plentiful & fresh and offers of more tea/coffee/toast was well worth it. wish i'd asked to see menu for dinner to see what i missed, my loss. drinks a little more pricey as all hotels but that is to be expected! location set down lane far enough to avoid noise from main road, looking at sheep shaking rain off themselves and birds swooping, pure bliss. for a cheap and cheerful meal 5 min drive at table table pub if you need to balance food budget! looking forward to staying again and trying evening meal next time! remember if you are at a busy time, w/end and events few places will be perfect thats why we prefer midweek with less folkes and better service.

We stayed at the Hatherley Manor for one night, as part of our Harry Potter tour. Our group consisted of 48 people (34 adults and 14 children). We arrived in the late afternoon after a tour. We had a short time to relax in our rooms before meeting for a group dinner and an evening with a storyteller. From the outside and the lobby Hatherley Manor, looks pretty cool. We were given our room assignments and we went to find our room.

We were on the first floor, which was lucky, since there is no elevator. The people on the second floor were not as happy. However, as we went down the corridor to our room, we noticed a funny musty smell that got worse as we continued on. Our room was clean and comfortable, but not the 4 star we had been led to believe. Our room looked very little like the website. Our room was good sized. The furnishings are fairly old fashioned. The linens scratchy and blankets are used instead of duvets. It was also fairly warm in our room, so I opened our window. It was the push out variety and opened to a alley. I did NOT feel comfortable leaving it open at night since it was at street height. Therefore, our room was pretty hot that night...and smelly (though by evening we had kind of become accustomed to it and it did not interfere with our sleep.

Our meals in the dining room were fine, though the staff, which cater to groups on a regular basis, seemed confused and indifferent. The exception was the very nice bartender.

There was a LOT of confusion as to where we were to have our storyteller. Originally it was to be in the bar area, but then we were moved to a function room, that was really not large enough for our group and the children ended up on the floor and some adults were standing. It seemed like they were not prepared for us. Of course, I do not know if this is the fault of the hotel or of our tour operator.

In all, I would probably not recommend this hotel. It would probably be nice for a getaway, but with so many groups here, I think you would be lost in the shuffle.

Having to make a booking in this area at very short noitce my wife called the hotel the night before we were due to travel and for the same B&B rate offered on expedia got us bed and breakfast plus evening meal for 2 adults and a baby in a superior room. The cot for the baby was free and there was a bottle of wine in the room when we arrived.
There are some negative comments about the hotel and it is not the most modern nor the most luxurious but the location was quiet, the grounds were pleasant and even with a wedding on the Friday night we were not disturbed.
What made this trip a pleasure was the staff. They were great on the telephone when we made the booking, the room was ready when we arrived with the cot already set up plus extra bed linen and towels for the baby. They sorted an early meal in the bar area for the baby in the evening and then brought the high chair into the restaurant while we ate slightly later. They arranged to launder and dry baby clothes for us which was a godsend.
The food for all 3 of us was very good. The standard of the evening meal in the restaurant was far higher than we expected and the cooked breakfast in the morning was very good.

Hatherley Manor is set up for weddings and corporate conferences and seems to do that quite well, but for the average guest it’s expensive and a bit old fashioned. Add in the fact that it’s neither as impressive a building nor as quaint as the name suggests and there are better places to stay. It not that it’s a bad hotel, just that you can get so much more for so much less. In fact the staff (with the one exception of the receptionist) were friendly, helpful and by far the best thing about the hotel.
If you are staying for a wedding, don’t assume the discount offered to the bride and groom’s guests is the best deal. We found it was no cheaper than rack rates and both the Hatherely Manor hotel own website and general hotel reservation websites were significantly cheaper. In fact even telephoning the reception to book was cheaper than the supposedly discounted rates for the wedding.
For general info, the hotel’s own website http://www.hatherleymanor.com/ is worth a look.

LOCATION – Hatherley Manor is located on Down Hatherley Lane on the edge of the Cotswolds, between Gloucester (4 miles) and Cheltenham (6 miles). Down Hatherley Lane sounds idyllic, but is in reality a very busy road without pavements (sidewalks for our US cousins) topped and tailed by industrial sites and car dealerships. It is however sufficiently remote that you will need taxis or transport to get anywhere, and the view in front of the hotel is pretty good.

ACCOMMODATION – Hatherley Manor has 50 ensuite bedrooms which are decorated in a traditional manner which extends to blankets instead of duvets for the beds. All the rooms are equipped with hairdryer, flat screen LCD digital televisions, tea & coffee making facilities with biscuits, complimentary bottled water, iron and ironing board. The “classic” rooms are reasonably small and the ensuites cramped with the basin, bath and toilet overlapping. The view from these rooms is also uninspiring – a sea of flat and corrugated iron roofs. You need to upgrade to get a view of the car park and again to see the walled garden. That said the room was perfectly adequate and very clean. Wireless broadband is available, but at a pretty expensive £5 per hour.

BREAKFAST – Cereal, fruit juice, fruit and yoghurt was available to serve yourself prior to the main event. On weekdays there is a menu of hot food and at the weekend a buffet of full English or continental breakfast together with tea, coffee and toast. The food was OK, reasonable quality and in more than sufficient quantities.

DINNER – Evening food is available from the bar or in the restaurant. The restaurant is a bit staid with a set menu which is a bit fussy and overpriced. The bar food is even more limited but just as expensive. As an example sausage and mash costs £16 and a cup of coffee £3.75. The bar food was however fairly good quality and the service was excellent.

we had booked to attend a wedding for friends and on the web site it looked like a very welcoming and upmarket hotel! When we arrived we were put in a room that was so small it was like a cupbard which really was not big enough for my partner and our young child. When we asked to move reception told us they were full but we could be upgraded the next day so we agreed. When we sat down to relax on the bed we started looking around and found that the room was covered in dirt, there were cobwebs and dust everywhere, dirty pillows and the bathroom was just terrible!
The next day we moved rooms to a larger room but as we soon found out this just meant more dirt! I

f you are going to this hotel for a function you really should pay a taxi fare at the end of the night and find another hotel to stay in at least this way at the end of the day you can co back to a nice clean room!I didnt think hotels like this could still get away with a lack of standard on this scale!AVOID!!!!
