We loved the wild flowers in the paramo, and the trail near the visitor centre, from where we actually caught a glimpse of the volcano top! We were delighted to see an Andean Hillstar (hummingbird).

Essentially an all day trip from Quito. Mountain and surroundings are spectacular! My tour with an English Spanish guide and 15 other people was $40 including lunch. You drive up to about 4500 metres then walk to the base camp and then to the edge of the glacier. Quite high so spend a few days getting used to the altitude first and even at that it will be work getting up that hill. Take your time, should have warm clothes including a wind breaker, a wool hat, good walking boots, water and sunscreen. Sunglasses also optional as the sand does blow around. Great way to spend a day in Ecuador!

What a successful and fun trip I had with Mountain Gurus and our summit climb of Cotopaxi (19,347 ft) in Ecuador! The nine day trip was the best of the 4 high altitude mountain climbs that I have done. Ecuador's landscape is stunning and the haciendas we stayed in were long on atmosphere. Leave the tents at home! We spent 5 to 6 days hiking, acclimatizing and laughing because the participants and guides were such a dynamic group. Once the glacier training and summit attempt came around however, the guides were extremely well trained and insistent that we each learn the necessary glacier skills to keep us safe and to allow us to summit! Dennis Broadwell, owner of Mountain Gurus, guided this trip and he and his team created an excellent experience. I would highly recommend Mountain Gurus and I am looking forward to another climb with them soon!

I liked the ancient ruins at the base of the mountain

The altitude is something to deal with but I enjoyed the place very much Go and you will not be disappointed unless the weather prevents a view,
