“Dirty and Horrible”
Reviewed March 4, 2012

$103 for a dirty room. My wife and I went to my sons wrestling sectionals and stayed the night there on March 2, 2012. The first thing we ask when getting there was if the kids could use the pool. We were told the pool could not be used over the weekend due to chemicals they just added to the pool. After getting to our room 215 we noticed how very cold it was. We turn the heat on and the furnace was very loud with a sqeeky fan. Cold air flowed in under the broken window sill which caused the the furnace to kick on for 3 minutes then shut off for 30 seconds. This went on all night long. There was hair all over the bathroom floor and the sheets on the bed had stains on them. A train went by every 10 to 20 minutes. I slept maybe 1 hour all night long setting up in a chair. My wife and I got up in the morning and decided to take the stairs down for breakfast. When we got to the hallway leading to the lobby by the pool it was blockaded by old rolled up carpeting blocking the doors to the pool. Finally after stepping over all this carpeting we finally made it to the the lobby for breakfast. The bannanas were black and the oranges had mold growing on them. No coffee, and the orange juice was sour. Other people complained and the only thing they brought out was another picture of orange juice. That one was also sour, so we take it the do not refrigerate it. My breakfast consisted of the only hard boiled egg they had out, and a piece of stail bread for toast. Would be helpful if the people working could speak english at the desk. First time staying at a Baymont inn and it will be my last. My son made state and the state wrestling will be held in Dekalb coming up this weekend. All the hotels in Dekalb are book except this one. My family will be staying in Rochelle at a nicer motel further away.

Room Tip: Stay Away!!!!!!!!!

Hadn't planned to stay here. But had a little problem checking into the Best Western, where I usually stay.
If you are going to an NIU Basketball this is probably the closest Motel.
I require a Handicapped room, and the Room was fine. Rate was $75., which was also fine.
Large Bathroom with no sloping in the shower, and PLENTY of rails around the commode to use in rising. NO Bath towels, just face rags and hand towels. No Clocks, so if you wanted to set an alarm you would have to use your own. TV had a large cable selection, BUT No remote, which they delivered promptly. Despite giving a credit card, I was told that I could not make an outside call. (I was trying to call home and tell family muy place of residence had changed). Manager said he'd make the call for me. I told him fuggedboutit. Since most persons would just use their cell phone, this is probably not an issue for most people.
Neat Bar next store, Fatty's. Easy walk. Student hangout. Lots of TVs that the friendly Bartenders will switch channels, for you. VERY meager Breakfast Bar, as is the case nowadays. NO Eggs, or Pastries, or Taters. Even if this was afootball weekend I think you could walk to Huskie Stadium.

I have never heard of a Magnuson Inn before but had a pool and was close to the convo center so we gave it a shot. Last time i ever do this. Pool area was so humid and hot could not breath in the room (hard to watch kids swim when you feel like in a sauna), had some nasty metal lining the walls just horrid. For the price paid be better off going little further finding somewhere else to stay that you can use what they offer.

10/1/10 - The Magnuson Inn & Suites of DeKalb, IL is now under new ownership. Improvements have been made and the hotel employees have been given the goal......to provide clean comfortable rooms and accommodating customer service....all at an affordable price.

The room smelled strange, there was stains on the floor, the pool was only 4 feet deep and about 70 degrees, the staff was less than charming, the maintenance guy was creepy, they cleaned the elevator using only a can of oust, the cable box kept falling and needed to be readjusted several times, the train tracks just outside the window were loud and busy all through the night, the internet doesn't work far from the lobby, and the mattress was very uncomfortable. I suppose I should have anticipated that since my stay was payed for by a coupon that they we're lacking business, but this failed to meet even my low expectations. If I had payed full price for that room I would have been irate.

I spent three days in DeKalb at the Magnuson in Nov. 2009. The room was spacious, clean, and comfortable. Free high-speed Internet in the room, and free local calls, were a plus. The complimentary breakfast was OK though limited to pastries, bagels, toast, hard-boiled eggs, waffles (fry-your-own), dry cereal, microwave oatmeal, coffee and juice. Some fresh fruit would have been a nice addition. The indoor pool looked inviting but I didn't have time to use it. A train runs past the hotel and you can hear it but it never woke me. If you are visiting NIU DeKalb and need a cheap comfortable place to stay, this hotel is fine.

I have stayed here in the past when it was a Baymont Inn few years back. Then the staff was great and I made it a point to stop back on my way through due to the manager who was great guy. Apparently they changed managers few years ago and in turn ended up changing names and the building feels like it is falling apart. Room was not well kep (needed vacuum, hairs in bathroom, ugh) Breakfast was also not fully stocked, not sure if changing to another name was from them choosing to or being forced to cause I have never been at a Baymont this poorly kept. Will not be back again.

Trying to sleep through a wild, drunken college party next to a train track and that sums up this motel. From the outside it looks like the only civilized place in town. It's not. Filthy dirty worn hallways, economy type rooms for sure. Biggest issue is the party bar parking lot under your window where squeeling, drunk girls scream uncontrollably into the wee hours of the morning. To make matters worse, the motel is 30 feet from one of the main freight train tracks and powerful locomotives hauling coal cars really do pass by every 20 minutes and practically loosen your fillings. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. OK well I would recommend it to a Foamer (train buffs).

  • Liked — Waffles for breakfast.
  • Disliked — Everything Else!
  • Tips/Secrets — If you have to stay, ask for the west side of building away from bar parking lot.
