Pretty much average. I haven't really had a dish that stands out, but the crab rangoon aren't bad.

“my favorite dish in the world”
Reviewed October 6, 2011

If you have occasion to be in north central Illinois, anywhere near DeKalb, try Bea's. It's been a favorite of those with good taste for twenty years, here in the University town in the cornfields. Bea is Vietnamese and has her own style of cooking. Everything is fresh and made to order. This is just about the only place outside of Chicago where you can get piles of fresh vegetables on top of your order of shrimp/chicken/pork/beef fried rice or noodles. Her huge bowls of soup will make your eyes bug. Her crab ragoons are the best, and so are her spring rolls, filled with crunchy vegetables and the best peanut sauce. When I have occasion to lunch out in DeKalb, 95% of the time I choose Bea's.

“Overrated”
Reviewed May 24, 2011

After reading reviews I thought this place would be pretty good, I was disappointed. My girlfriend liked the spring rolls, I thought they were OK. That was the best part if the meal. Both entrees were sub par. Service was sub par as well. Another crappy dekalb restaurant.

“Creative cuisine served slowly and rudely...”
Reviewed April 11, 2009

There is no doubt that Bea's Wok n' Roll is a diamond in the rough in DeKalb, Illinois. Problem is, the customer has to be willing to put up with the vagaries in temperament of its owner. Is it worth it? Generally, yes. But, don't ask too many questions, don't ask to "have it your way," don't ask anything, really, or be prepared to be treated as the cast in Seinfeld was in the episode related to the "Soup Nazi." The daily specials are generally the best choices. They are fresh, innovative, and make use of the freshest ingredients of the season (mangoes, pineapples, etc). Three generally exist. One is always a soup, which is a huge, steaming bowl of aromatic herbs, vegetables, and some kind of spicy or curried chicken or beef or pork. If you have a cold, this is a surefire cure. The other two are part of a wide repertoire of Vietnamese spices and ingredients, sometimes in fusion with other cuisines, such as Mexican.

After two visits, the owner will remember what it was you preferred, which vegetables you left uneaten on the plate, and your name if you mentioned it during your visit. She is moody, overworked, yet sometimes conversational and interested in you as well as willing to share some of what her own life entails. She enjoys compliments but knows intuitively if they are false. She will scold you if you don't take home the two remaining crab rangoon or leave the bok choy in a pile in the corner of your plate. This can be both good or bad for you, depending on how you relate to your own mother.

The place deserves your attention.
