Had a nice diinner last night at the Red Onion. Was staying at The Bidwell House B&B and the dinner was part of our package. Would definitely eat here again.

It was a bit tricky to find this place in the dark, lots of winding around in a residential area thinking we had missed it, but then we turned the corner and there it was! Great bar area with a few tables in front of the fireplace and pool table then a separate main dining area with less charm but lots more room. The holiday special cocktails were great (try the gingerbread man) but then the food came out. Heaven! Prime Rib with horseradish, twice baked potatoes, and perfect green beans still crispy but not raw, fresh salmon with a parmesan-artichoke-sundried tomato crust with the same sides. There was very little conversation for the next 15 minutes as we tucked in to our dishes, absolutely wonderful. The peach cobbler was more like an upside-down peach cake served warm with gobs of homemade whipped cream, enough for two to share and a lovely ending to a lovely meal. It was obviously a gathering place for locals based on the greetings from the servers/hostess/bartender as folks wandered in. We will be back!

We stopped in at the Red Onion at Lake Almanor for dinner on our recent visit to this lake to go fishing. My wife had the chicken marsala which was excellent and I had the rib eye steak which was cooked to perfection. We shared a well priced bottle of merlot, and our meal was memorable. Our server Danielle provided excellent service as the timing of food delivery was just right so we could enjoy conversation and the ambiance of the restaurant. We noticed that good service seemed to be reflected throughout all staff.

There aren't many restaurant choices in the area, but this one is not only great, but worth return visits. We would like to try other entrees. The smells coming from the kitchen are that good!

The Red Onion has the decor that says you are in safe middle class company there. Its neighborhood and what it chose from the retaurant supply firms says you won't be criticised for coming here.
This summer it had a great Slovakian waiter, but he is now back in Bratislava.
There is one genuinely good thing about the food. Several of the sauces are well conceived and add an element of authenticity and taste.
However, these strengths are way outweighed by the drawbacks.
The Red Onion is institutional. There's limited choice on the menu and almost no flexibility in adapting to customers with not eceptionally unusual preferences or needs. You do it their way. The exception here was the Slovakian student, but he could push the institution only a little.
The food probably comes from a larger restaurant supply company. I recognised the crab cakes, for example, instantly. They were perfectly round and flat and could easily have been a chain's hamburger patty just pulled from the refrigerator. I recognized the look, the strange greyish color, and the hard-to-define and not very crab-like taste from several other unhappy experiences.
Another evening I tried a fish dish. The fish had no taste, no doubt because of its long stay frozen somewhere in the supply chain. The sauce that came with it did have taste, but this effort did not rescue the dish.
As I got to know the area, I found far better choices -- enen if in less "safe" class wrapping.
The Happy Garden Restaurant in Chester is the exact opposite of the Red Onion. Here the building looks modest, and the husband/wife team that runs it has some of the paintings of their young daughter up on a divider. When a friend complained about a draft, the husband was on top of a ladder in two minutes adjusting the vent. The place was full of locals, who know what a good deal and what a genuinely happy place this is. There is also almost infinite choice on the menu. The sevice was fast and very solicitous. The food was fresh and plentiful, including a scallops and vegetable dish. A surprise red bean desert was first rate and perhaps even a healthy desert. Why pay two to three times as much for the superficial when you can get true human excellence and far better food at the Happy Garden?

Recently I went to a reunion of high school girlfriends from 50+ years ago. We went to this
restaurant and found the food and service to be wonderful. I suggest eating out on the deck,
and go a little early as it gets crowded. Apparently the word is out that this is a great place
for a good, reasonable meal. There were a dozen of us and the waitresses were courteous
and attentive.
