“World-class Architecture and Hospitality in southern Illinois!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 27, 2011

First, I must disclose my friend and I stayed here October 2009 (not 2010). Beyond that, I have nothing but glowing comments about the Bruce Goff B&B and its host, Glen Etzkorn. This is a destination B&B, meaning I went to that region to stay at the B&B, and then happily enjoyed much that the region has to offer (natural beauty, a wine trail, and complete relaxation). The B&B is spectacular in its design and architecture, and Glen's sharing of the history and other details just enhanced the experience. We had free run, and had such a great time that I'm currently trying to organize another visit with two other friends. Oh! I have to mention the first-rate breakfasts! If you are lucky, Glen will still have some morels on hand that he generously shares in some manner in the breakfasts! I've stayed at many B&Bs, and this one ranks at the top. I will say, though, that if you don't enjoy interesting architecture and the close proximity of nature, you may not enjoy this gem of a B&B.

Tucked into the Shawnee hills, this Bruce Goff house is a dazzle of stone, sun, glass, and mosaic. Each room faces rock overhang and thick forest; no need to leave bed to enjoy the views. In fact, every seat in the house affords stunning views of landscape or architecture. Be sure to visit each room. Glen, the artist-owner, is both laid-back and energetic. If you please, he’ll interpret the architecture, geology, and personalities that surround this famed house. Alternately, you could browse the home’s vast library. Glen prepared a feast in the morning. Afterward, we all hiked the property—trails of leaves, fallen oaks, stacks of rock. Wear boots. Or just stay inside and soak in the sunken jade tub. Whichever you choose, this trip outside the city will be unforgettable.

The architecture was amazing, the morning view from our bedroom window breathtaking, being in nature restorative, being sheltered in comfort relaxing, and being made to feel welcome (and full!) by Glen, the owner and manager of Bruce Goff Castle Bed and Breakfast—nice, too!

We got to wander in nature, soak in the sunken tub, chat in the reading loft, watch a video about the architect who designed the home, and warm up by the fire.

This place is a destination. It's the kind of place a person visits year after year after year. I've never experienced anything like it. Next time, I'll probably come just with "the guys"; the immense amounts of stone, fairly masculine decor, and connectedness with nature was a bit much for my wife. She enjoyed the experience. I relished it; the place made me feel more alive!

Though the castle isn't accessible by public transportation, it's possible to take the train from Chicago to Carbondale, then to rent a car for the short remainder of the trip. The Bruce Goff Castle Bed and Breakfast would be a great location for a men's group retreat, for a pastor to recoup over a long weekend, for father-son bonding time "away from it all," or for aficionados of organic or prairie-style architecture to host an annual meeting. Highly recommended!
