Location, staff, room, customer service are all top notch! It's obvious it is an old building but from outside to inside the bathroom DeWitt Place has been looked after and maintained well and kept up to date.
I stayed to watch the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field and the experience the Chicago nightlife. You can get a taxi from just outside the main door (which has electronic security for safety) they turn on a light so taxis stop within a minute!
I suffer from anxiety and was traveling alone, but I felt at home straight away and it really feels like you have your own apartment downtown. Probably better kept than most apartment blocks that is for sure. Nice convenience store opposite which although a bit pricey has a good selection of food, drinks, alcohol etc.
Lake Michigan is only just two blocks away and it just behind the main street Michigan ave (Mag mile)
DeWitt is actually safer than Mag Mile I feel as it is quieter. All in all excellent place and already planning my next stay!

As mentioned by the previous reviewer, the location is excellent, and the kitchen is nice to have, but to be honest, I only used the microwave and fridge to warm leftovers.

Cons: The aircon is LOUD - and it smells funny. The bathroom is tiny, and yes, it needs a makeover, but it didn't really bother us, because we only spend 10 minutes a day in the bathroom. What bothered me, is that we stayed for 9 nights - I would have expected a courtesy clean, say every 5 or 7 days - wouldn't that be decent?
I also found two bugs, but again, it didn't bother me, because it can happen anywhere.
I found the unit smaller than I expected. It really is a tiny bachelor. The couch, which we used every night, was horrible. Springs everywhere in your back. We asked to move to a unit with two beds, at a premium, but none were available for the full 9 days. The area, although residential, is loud, we had a corner unit on an intersection: There are more than 3 hospitals around the place - sirens are frequently heard. Shouts, dogs barking etc. you hear it all. With the loud aircon on, it kind of blended, but I never slept without earplugs.

Pros: Staff were always friendly and helpful. The laundry room is convenient - 5 quarters for a wash, 4 quarters for a dry - note: there is a change dispenser, but not a detergent dispenser, bring/buy your own. Location great, although, I have to stress: this is NOT a quiet place. The gym looked nice, never used it. The lounge has free coffee. Internet was fine throughout our stay.
There's enough packing space in your room - and a laundry basket and broom were provided. Bed wasn't bed.

Tips: Dishwashing liquid and a sponge are provided. If you are going to cook, bring some oil/spices.

Will I stay here again? I don't know. I will rather look for something else first - within my price range and size required...maybe with Hotwire etc. If I don't find anything that way, then I will reconsider.

Staying at the Dewitt Place apartments over a long Labor Day Weekend. I really wanted to like it, particularly because of the price and location. Plus, it has received excellent reviews so I thought that it would be better than a traditional hotel because of the kitchen. The pros- just two blocks from the Magnificient Mile, so it is super close to everything. It also has a small kitchen with a stove and fridge; we could save some money by eating breakfast in, making our own coffee, and have somewhere to store our leftovers. The staff was very friendly and personable. Since it's a small studio apartment, it is bigger than most Chicago hotel rooms. And, lastly the price was much more reasonable than the traditional hotels in the same vicinity. The cons- the rooms are very worn and dated. The bathtub looked dirty and was pitted because it needed to be refinished. The rooms are dusty and aggrevated my allergies. Also, there is only a loud air conditioning unit that needed to have the filter cleaned because of the mildewy smell. There was also a glade wall plug-in on the wall to help cover up the smell. Overall, would I stay here again. No. But, if you care more about location and you're on a budget, this might be the place for you.

This was my second time at DeWitt Place and once again I was left wondering why anybody ever stays anywhere else when they're in Chicago. The staff are really friendly and helpful, and it's so nice to be up in your room within a minute of walking through the door. The location of this place simply can't be beaten - right next to the Hancock, a hundred yards or so from Michigan Avenue in one direction and the Lake in the other. Chicago Red line is around ten minutes' walk and there are lots of buses available at the end of the street. In the summer there's a wonderful lake breeze and it's noticeably cooler here than down in the Loop, for instance. There's even a convenience store directly opposite which is open until nine at night, seven days a week.

The rooms aren't hugely luxurious, but well-equipped and the bed is comfortable. As noted by many people (including myself, previously) the bathrooms could do with being modernised but honestly, it's really not that big a deal - they're at least clean and everything works. The free wireless internet is fast and reliable and really makes a difference when you're planning your next day's activities. Having a full kitchen is also invaluable. Air conditioning is via a window unit - pretty standard for Chicago - and it is a bit noisy, but it's effective enough and if you run it for a couple of hours before you go to sleep, the room stays reasonably cool overnight.

All in all, for the price (much lower than most places in Chicago, lower even than Days' Inn) you simply can't beat this place. If you want to be serviced and pampered, then clearly you need to be somewhere else, but if you simply want a cheap, comfortable, well-appointed and REALLY well-located base to explore Chicago, look no further. You won't do better than DeWitt Place, certainly not at their prices.

Room Tip: Don't bother with a "Lake View" room - you can barely see the Lake anyway. Rooms at t...

This hotel was close enough to walk to about anything downtown within reason if you don"t mind walking which we did'nt. We did have to pay for parking across the street but not surprising in Chicago.

If you are self sufficient and like to feel like you're not just visiting a city and actually living there, this place fits the bill. Great full kitchen, nice bachelor layout. Yes the bathroom is small and cramped (ours wasn't updated yet) but that's what a lot of city apartments are like. Walking - 5 min to beach, 5 min to Magnificient mile, 15-20 min to Navy Pier... just ridiculously central to everything. We loved it for the price and for the experience. Staff was great & we loved having a kitchen to have breakfast before we started our day.
