Holiday Inn Chicago Downtown
Ranked #120 of 192 Hotels in Chicago
Reviewed October 4, 2013

Stayed for 4 nights. Quieter than another hotel chain I stayed at on N. Dearborn Street 1 year ago. A very generous breakfast coupon was included in the room rate, great way to start the day. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Room was clean and I could control the temperature settings, including running the fan all the time for a nice white noise background. Didn't care for the soft pillows, but not a real problem.

Downside is it's removed from restaurants and shopping, but that contributes to how quiet it was for a downtown hotel, right off the interstate. There's an abandoned Post Office building across the street and limited offices/businesses nearby. If you stay here, prepare to walk at least 1/2 mile to restaurants. Overnight parking costs $35, I recommend taxis which are readily available.

First stop in the US and not a great start.
The hotel itself was a typical mid range chain hotel, rooms were comfortable and clean, the roof top pool was good and the location was not to bad, next to the subway or a nice walk to the lake front.
On the other hand service was the worst I had ever seen. Front desk were hardly knew what they were doing and were rude. The breakfast staff were running around looking like slobs, the manager looked like he'd slept in his uniform which was dirt and untucked, the waitress forgot orders and service was unbelievably slow. The food when it did come was ok. The restaurant itself felt like a plastic diner with a horrible feel and we would not eat there again.
The only encounter with staff that left a decent impression was the bar tender at the bar / pizza joint. He was polite, helpful and friendly and thoroughly deserved his offensively large tip.

Accommodations are what one would expect from a moderate priced chain. Smaller room but was pleasantly clean and well maintained. Very polite and helpful staff. Convenient to the blue line and Union Station. Don't expect a room with a view.

The hotel has nothing special to show but its location is good.
The management is trying hard to ensure that customers feel comfortable and welcomed but the staff at the same time is trying the opposite - and achieve it very successfully!
I don't know what I was expecting by being an IHG member. I know in the US they value Customer Service and care a lot; there, they don't even bother.
It was a great disappointment. We stayed at several IHG group hotels, in various cities in the US and Europe, this one was the worst in many aspects.
This family experience at this hotel was both unpleasant and will remain negatively unforgetable; an experience you don't want to repeat!
By the end of our stay (and we stayed almost 3 weeks), the staff at the breakfast room were avoiding us totally. They were even very provocative without saying a word to us. They were not even say good-morning to us! We ended up avoiding them too. It was very strange, very!
Maybe a hotel to avoid afterall!

Room Tip: Rooms are rather small but clean enough. Same as bathrooms.

We were facing a crisis and had to check out after just checking in. They were incredibly understanding and empathetic. They allowed us to check out promptly without a hassle. They were all so incredibly gracious, each member of the staff. We will always have a lot of hotel options in Chicago, but this experience was above and beyond and they have earned our loyalty going forward. Sometimes it is simply refreshing to know that human being run the place, not just rules and regulations.

My family went to Chicago for the Michael Buble concert September 7, 2013 and decided to stay at the Holiday Inn Downtown Chicago. Our check-in with Kat with quick and easy and she gave us all the necessary information to find restaurants and even a great taxi (one that could accommodate 5 people). Check-out with Alina was quick and super easy too - just soo nice.

We had 2 rooms, which were spotless and beautifully decorated. Georgeous hallway carpeting had been newly installed that week. The elevators came quickly; there was never a wait. The doorman was very helpful with our car, getting the best taxi in the city (Joe's taxi), and directions to places we were looking for.

We could not have asked for a nicer place with friendlier people - it was perfect for us.

Room Tip: Great in-house restaurant named Sunny's; with super friendly staff and really good food at reas...

My husband, our toddler, and I were visiting Chicago for the first time this week - we stayed at the Holiday Inn and Suites for 3 nights. We found the customer service to be awesome - from the moment we arrived and checked in, a great lady at the front desk (have forgotten to take note of her name) - was friendly, warm, and welcoming and gave us directions to where we could find a great restaurant for dinner (since it was Labour Day, quite a few businesses would be closed). Our room was clean and comfortable and suited our needs just perfectly. The negative comments about the location are a bit exaggerated - if you are able to walk even for a short distance (5 minutes), you can get transit OR as visitors, we ended up getting a three day pass for one of the popular 3 day hop on / hop off trolleys. One of stops of the trolley was at the Willis building so once we knew this, we actually took the trolley to this stop and then only had just a very short walk back to the hotel. It was perfect for us! I used the fitness facility at the hotel and it was great - very clean (seemed new?) and had a great variety of equipment. I only used the treadmill but it was great - the equipment was new, towels were stocked, and individual t.v.s on each machine. An avid runner, I enjoy being able to use the gyms at hotels while travelling and I appreciated this feature very much! Overall, we would stay here again if when we visit Chicago again!! :)
