Homewood Suites by Hilton Chicago-Downtown
Ranked #48 of 191 Hotels in Chicago

Reviewed January 1, 2012

We have stayed at the Homewood Suites in downtown Chicago twice and it has become our "go to" hotel of choice now. We have stayed at a variety of hotels near/on Michigan Avenue and this place is the best value overall. Honestly, I don't know why they do not charge more for this hotel (anybody from Hilton reading this...pay no attention to that comment :-) ).

The first time we stayed here was Thanksgiving weekend of 2009 and found it very comfortable and priced very reasonably. The second time was this year (2011), again for Thanksgiving weekend. The Homewood Suites has a great breakfast buffet that never seemed to be out of anything even with the large crowd of families staying there for Thanksgiving weekend shopping and family get-togethers. Thanksgiving afternoon and evening was a special treat with a full traditional Thanksgiving buffet meal for guests...free! We had reservations at a nearby restaurant but canceled those and decided to try the buffet instead and we were pleasantly surprised. Granted, the food wasn't anything over the top, but was really quite good and they had wine and beer too. We really enjoyed the food and the opportunity to just chill out and have some family time over dinner. During a normal week (Sun-Thurs I believe) they have a dinner buffet for guests that caters to the business travelers.

As for the rooms, we had a suite that consisted of a living room area and kitchenette with a table and chairs that could be used for eating meals which would be great for families with children, but since we were there on "Black Friday" for shopping, the table got used for a spot to put all of the shopping bags. The sofa opened up into a sleeper and the separate bedroom had a king sized bed. The bathroom was adequate and we had good water pressure in the shower even though we were on the 18th floor. The place was very clean and each day the suite was cleaned and made up by early to mid afternoon.

No matter what hotel you stay at in downtown Chicago, everybody always complains about how much it costs to park your car. Yes, the going rate is usually $42 to $50+ per night but you kind of just have to accept that fact...unless you can snag the Homewood Suites deal that includes parking for $10! When you check the rates for the various rooms, make sure to look for the $10 parking suite deals. It truly is just $10 for parking over the price of the room. I think we paid $149.00 per night and that included parking, breakfast (full buffet, not just rolls and cereal), and Thanksgiving dinner! If you have ever stayed in downtown Chicago you know that is a great deal.

All of the staff were friendly and helpful and always greeted you upon entering or leaving. The food staff were equally helpful and were always checking to make sure we had everything we needed from the buffet.

As with any of the hotels during busy times, the wait for the elevator can get a little long, but that really only happened once or twice and the wait was much less that at the really big high-rise hotels on the Mag Mile. The location is great and only blocks away from Michigan Ave and a short walk to State Street and the Loop area.

We recommended this place to friends and they were not disappointed. We will be back next time we go downtown.

These suites are in a tremendous location - you can be right in the Magnificent Mile within 3 minutes of leaving the hotel, walk across the river into the loop within 7 minutes, and walk to the Navy Pier in 15 minutes. They are also tremendous value for money - we had four people in our suite which would have cost significantly more had we checked into a hotel and booked two rooms. All of the staff are extremely helpful - I have stayed in much more expensive places than this and not had staff get me a taxi this quickly or get my bags to the room so fast. On that basis, I would thoroughly recommend this as a good place to stay in Chicago. On the downside, the decor is a little tired, the lifts can be slow at busy times, the breakfast is fairly basic and you need to be pretty assertive if you want to get your bagel into the toaster amongst the jostling crowd that quickly fills up the fairly small food serving area. However, I come back to the fact that at the price, I doubt there is a better place to stay

We had a fine stay here. The location was great. It was nice having the breakfast there, but the breakfast was more crowded than in other Homewood Suites and did not have as much of a selection. We had good service, but were not thrilled with our room. We had a view of a roof, and the room smelled like smoke. Management told us they thought it was coming from a nearby restaurant. The closet door was not working which made it hard to open and close. It did not seem as clean as other Homewood Suites. But overall, our stay was fine.

This is a decent hotel in a great location. Our suite provided a good amount of room and was very clean. Check-in was efficient, but very perfunctory - can't say the front desk staff was overly friendly or welcoming, but they were efficient. There were a few minor negatives - some of the doors in our suite had holes in them, the water pressure wasn't particularly good, the drain in the tub was very slow, and the wine and beer during the "happy hour" were atrocious (they could do much better for not much more money - and maybe even less). But, the food during happy hour was plentiful and quite tasty (you could make dinner out of it) and breakfast was excellent with lots of choices and very good service from the staff. Staff during "happy hour" was also very nice - friendly and looking for ways to be helpful. The couch in the lobby could use replacing as it's pretty saggy and threadbare. Overall it was a very good choice. We'd definitely stay here again - good value for the money.

We appreciate your suggestions for improvement. I have shared the room challenges with the Engineering team in addition to the follow-up with the Front Office team. Please feel free to contact me by phone or email I would be interested in suggestions for the wine and beer selections.

We picked this hotel for the location, and we were correct. It is an easy walk to many attractions. The suite life made it easier for the kids after an exhausting day. The rooms are a nice size for a city hotel, and the kitchen was very useful for leftover Chicago pizza! The buffet provided at the hotel wasn't great but it was decent for a busy family that wanted to grab breakfast and go. I would recommend this hotel to families for the location, the ability to spread out and relax, and the kids even enjoyed the indoor pool after a long day of site-seeing! I would also highly recommend the travel passes (GoChicago or CityPass). These passes allow you to skip the lines which can get very long during the summer, especially on the weekends. Both passes were accepted at most of the sites. Well worth the price! The line for the Field Museum was around the block - crazy - and we didn't have any problems (find the side door - not the main entrance.) The Science and Industry Museum should not be missed, and we all (kids included) enjoyed the Architectural River Cruise. It was just the right length of time.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I do apologize about the comfort of the sofa beds our Engineering team has been replacing many of the inserts over the past couple of weeks to help improve comfort. Please feel free to call or email me regarding the Welcome Home reception as we are always striving to improve in this area.

After reading the reviews I was very excited about this hotel, but upon arriving I was underwhelmed by the offerings.

First the positives:
The hotel has a great location, easy walk to Michigan Ave. the breakfast was very good and the fitness center was above average for a hotel. The breakfast was organized well and was less chaotic than ones I have experienced in the past at other hotels.

Second the negatives:
Probably the most annoying thing was the heat in the hotel. At times it felt like a sauna, even in late December. The hotel only has two elevators, which for a good size hotel meant long waits for one. The evening dinner was a bit much and very crowded. Maybe a smaller reception would have made sense, instead of a free for all Old Country Buffett style dinner.

Even with the outstanding positives, I'm not sure I would stay here again.
