My husband and I just returned from a four day visit to Chicago, the city where I was born and spent my first forty years. We were visiting family in Lincoln Park and decided to stay in the Gold Coast area for its shopping and dining and its proximity to the Art Institute of Chicago as well as other museums. I chose to stay at the Talbott Hotel based on the tripadvisor reviews as well as its outstanding location. It truly is one of the best hotel experiences we have ever had, and that would include some excellent luxury hotels in this country, Europe, Asia and South America.
The staff is wonderful: knowledgeable, attentive, enthusiastic. The decor is beautiful. We stayed in room 1508, and it was spacious and quiet. The mattress was gloriously firm, The linens are first rate: plenty of huge thirsty Frette towels and very soft sheets. There was a Keurig coffee maker, a state of the art TV, and our room was always cleaned early and thoroughly.
The hotel restaurant is a great place for cocktails and good food, with outdoor seating that was beautiful for our breakfasts. The service was excellent: competent and friendly.
We decided to dine in the neighborhood on Friday evening and at the last minute, Gene, the hotel concierge, was able to make reservations for the time we chose at Merlo on Maple which is just a few short blocks away. Great food and a quiet, elegant setting.
When we first arrived at the Talbot we were greeted by Dwayne, who is an excellent source of knowledge regarding the area, and just about anything else we wanted to know about our stay.. He told us about a wonderful grocery store just around the corner called Potash that has all kinds of wonderful reasonably priced food and snacks for when you don't really want a restaurant. The deli across the street from the Talbott is also a place for tasty, fresh food: wraps, salads, soup, sandwiches, etc.
The best feature of this hotel is its size . There really is a feeling of "family" and a sense that every guest is their top priority, and is truly welcome in this jewel of a hotel. We won't stay anywhere else during our future visits to Chicago.
