My husband and I traveled to Chicago for the first time and stayed at The Drake Hotel along the Magnificent Mile. WOW! We wanted to stay somewhere that had an authentic, non chain feel and this was it!

The pros:
* The hotel retains a unique feel and atmosphere even though it is a Hilton property.

* The entire staff provided EXCELLENT customer service. Everyone from the valet, to front desk, to Concierge was friendly, helpful and professional.

* Walking to many restaurants and shopping areas is simple and within blocks.

* The hotel has access to the lakeside recreational trail across the street for those who want outdoor recreation and truly well equipped fitness center indoors.

* Rooms were well sized for a city environment.

* Easy to navigate area without a car to head downtown for the adventurous who are willing to use subway. Access is an easy several block walk.

* Easy access to many local attractions listed in the Go Chicago card.

Possible cons:
This is truly a four star hotel, so the prices for everything matched that expectation. Hence, I would not recommend this hotel for lower middle class families traveling on a tight budget.

Room Tip: Ask for a lake view room on a higher floor.

booked a number of rooms for my daughter's wedding, which was offsite, but this classic hotel did not disapopoint. because we had more than 10 rooms booked, did receive a nice discount off room rates. excellent service by the staff and the meeting services manager. rooms were geerous in size, the Jr Suites very nice, with old world charm, and very comfortable beds. great for people watching as lots going on there. concierge were very helpful distribution welcome envelops for all the wedding guests who stayed there. bellmen were very helpful and efficient. and just a classic place- you will not be disappointed.

Room Tip: views of Lake Michigan are great- north and east sides; Michigan Ave views help you gage the wind...

Good for business trip or vacation since it is located in the magnificent mile, walking distance to several restaurants and atractions, right in front of the lake.

Concierge and reception are extremely helpful, such as all the staff.

If you don't mind old, this is a place to do business, enjoy the city and pamper yourself.
Good solid old style service, Voyagecritic litte bit biased because they found me a great room amidst the chaos created by the storm in NY...
Great restaurants, very good bars, 10th floor lounge has breathtaking view
perfect location
Will i go back? Yes

Room Tip: Enjoy the whole hotel

December 9th, 2011, my wife and I took a weekend trip to Chicago, this was our first visit to the city. After extensive research I decided to book our hotel stay at The Drake. This was not just any trip, I proposed to my girlfriend of 5 years. The concierge named Andrea was more helpful than anyone could have asked for. She actually filmed my proposal and had a security officer keep watch of my ring, which was wrapped as a present under the Christmas tree (which is beautiful). She booked reservations for the restaurant Sixteen at the Trump tower. The evening was magnificent and not enough great things can be said about the hotel staff and the beauty of the hotel. Very old, classic luxury hotel.

As others commented the Drake is now part of the Hilton chain of hotels. The common areas of the hotel are charming and quite large, including the lobby and adjoining bar restaurant area.
The front desk personnel were professional and friendly. I found my King bed room to be a step up from some of the other "older" hotels in Chicago. The bed linens and duvet cover were very nice. The room did have an electronic temp thermostat on the wall. There is a modern flat screen LCD TV and fridge loaded with over priced snacks and drinks.
The bathroom had the standard glass plate surface below the mirror, however the nice surprise was the room to place your toiletries around the sink. Most older hotels require you to balance your items on the small glass shelf. There was a wraparound shower curtain surrounding the tub. My pet peeve is why the shower curtain bar isn't curved? Once again, 2 feet of movement either direction has you against the shower curtain or the shower tile wall. Eew.
The lower level bar and restaurant area is comfortable and the food was OK. The Oktoberfest specials included a lackluster Wiener Schnitzel, plus a pork loin sauerkraut dish which I did not try.
Overall the Drake delivers. It just doesn't deliver anything extraordinary for this traveler. I'm sure I'll stay here again sometime in the future. If there was a 3.75 star rating I would give it.
My final word... I was waiting for the elevator early one morning. Second guest room floor, no one was around within eyesight. A pleasant female voice said "hello" to me... I looked around me and around the corner and no one was within view! I was all by myself. A little creepy but a great true story.

Nice old Hotel. Clean, everone very helpful. The restaraunts and bars although good close very early during the week which for a hotel that caters to the business crowd seems a little strange. It's a little on the expensive side but still very good.
