I had mixed feelings about this sheraton, but overall i'd recommend it and might stay here again myself if the price was right. First off, i'd say it is a so-so sheraton as far as sheratons are concerned. I've stayed in nicer sheratons, and I've stayed in worse. This one is a huge convention center hotel, and is a little older, and so it's a little worn down. The bathrooms for example look a little older and show a little dirt in the edges of the floor and shower tiles etc., but other than that everything was clean and acceptable enough, so that's all I care about there. Some of the other negatives were that the phone by the bed didn't work, nor did the mini-fridge (all the beverages inside were practically room temperature). Also, the first morning I spilled a little bit of coffee in bed, which left a little bit of a stain on the pillow case. They evidently don't routinely change the pillow cases, because i had that same stained pillowcase with me the next two nights. (though I was very willing to overlook this because, frankly, having free coffee/coffee makers in each room is invaluable to me!) Also, once or twice we had a little bit of a line waiting for elevator, as like I said, this is a big convention hotel which can pack in a lot of people. I didn't eat at their restaurants, but have heard they are pricey. (I can't confirm that, but can confirm a rail gin and tonic will run you $11 at the hotel bar! yikes! But that's not a big deal for me, because you don't come to chicago to eat at a hotel restaurant or drink at a hotel bar - there's too much going on elsewhere in the city, and so shame on you anyway for not getting out and finding something better anyway.) The biggest negative for me personally was that the hotel is a bit further from the El line than I initially thought it was, looking at the map. It was a full 20+ minute walk to get to the El Red Line, and even further to get to the Blue line (which you need going to and from O'Hare.) This obviously isn't a big deal, but it means you have to budget your time accordingly or take a cab each time you want to use the El.
On the upside, this Sheraton had a number of good things going for it too. We had a really great view from our hotel room - we were on the 21st floor and could see both the lake to the left and the river cutting through the city to the right. They also have a great outdoor lounge area/deck on the 7th floor and a nice indoor pool and health club right there too. The hotel is also centrally located, right between the Loop and River North, and so while I would prefer a similar location on the river closer to the El, this is probably the next best thing, since you could walk over to the Navy Pier in less than 30 minutes, or across the river into the Loop in less than 30 minutes, or up to Streeterville or the Mag Mile in less than 30 minutes, etc. Plus you never have to wait for a cab, everytime we just walked out the hotel frontdoor and was able to jump immediately inside a waiting cab. Also, the staff was great. The concierge desk was very helpful, and the bell hops were the best, going above and beyond the call of duty (even helping to get a food delivery order up to our room when we weren't able to be there in time to meet the driver) - the whole staff was great. So my bottom line is, I would definitely stay here again if I got a good price, but otherwise would look for a hotel closer to the El.
