Raffaello Hotel
Ranked #106 of 192 Hotels in Chicago
Reviewed December 4, 2012

We booked this hotel after hearing of it through a Southwest Airlines email and were very satisfied. Unlike what other reviewers stated, the elevator was just fine and worked faster than the one at my office. The room was super clean. Large, flat screen TV worked great. Amazing shower with great water pressure. It's a two minute walk to the Magnificent Mile and three blocks from the Red Line subway to get everywhere else. It was our first time to Chicago and we had a great time. The Raffaello was a perfect anniversary trip hotel. I'd highly recommend looking online and calling the hotel directly (what I did) for lower rates than what is on their site.

Room Tip: The King suite makes for an even better stay!

I was told my room was ready, checked in, was given my room key and proceeded to my room. While I was unpacking, the hotel staff entered my room! No knock, just used their key to enter. She said she was there to check the mini bar. I don't care why she was there, she should have knocked and waited! My room didn't have any hand soap. I asked a maid and she said they were out. She proceeded to say it happens all the time and they are told to tell guests to use the complementary body wash in place of soap. I also asked the front desk and they also stated they were out of soap. How do you run out of hand soap! I was less than impressed by the shower tile and grout which was severely neglected. The drain was so slow that even after turning off the water, drying off and putting on lotion, I snapped a picture of the standing water. There was a large stain on the carpet right inside the door, dust was built up on the shelves and there was a large amount of prior guests hair under the vanity. This hotel was not worth the $229/night price tag.

My husband and I were in Chicago for a meeting and had a nightmare stay at another hotel the night before. We chose Raffaello for the positive reviews, high star rating for near budget prices, and that the whole hotel was nonsmoking. The location is fantastic, right next to the Hancock tower right off the heart of Michigan Ave. When we checked in, they were friendly, welcoming, and randomly gave us a free upgrade to a suite! The room was bright, warm, clean and so very welcome after the horrible night elsewhere. There was a separate living area, with double doors opening to the bedroom. The bathroom had a rainforest showerhead which was wonderful. We slept incredibly soundly and well, ordered room service for breakfast and lingered for much of the day. The hotel rooftop bar (DrumBar) was inviting, beautiful, and had a separate nook in the back which was quiet. The service there was excellent, checking on us but not pressuring us to buy drinks. The next night we brought friends who were expecting and they brought us mocktails on the house! We also went to the restaurant next door (Pelago) for dinner, which has its only entrance from the hotel as well and it was lovely but a bit $$$.

The only thing I would change is the price of breakfast (which is only room service), which was very pricey. Juice $8, berries on your $12 oatmeal is $8, the "gold coast breakfast" (coffee, juice, eggs, slightly burnt toast, sausage and potatoes) is $25. They misunderstood our order and brought 2 "gold coasts" and the whole order came to $100! Ouch.

Overall it was a relaxing, luxurious and welcoming stay. We felt cared for in a way big hotels forget about nowadays and would definitely come back.

Our goal here at the Raffaello is to provide our guests with memories that will stay with them forever. We do so by opening our doors and making you feel at home the moment you step into our lobby. The rooms are just a small part of making your stay a memorable one. The staff and the personal effects they have on our guests are truly what makes us unlike any other stay one might have in Chicago. We were delighted to hear you thoroughly enjoyed your stay and look forward to welcoming you back for many more to come.

We have stayed in several hotels in this area and Raffaello is by far the quietest room we have ever stayed in. There were no sounds from the street, our room did face a parking area and the back of the Seneca so we did not face the street. Even better there were no sounds from the rooms on either side and no loud door slammings in the morning. And all the rooms on our floor were occupied. The bed was comfortable as we're the pillows. The best rest we have had in a hotel in Chicago.
The elevators are small so we checked out earlier than planned to avoid the rush.

Room Tip: One of the top floors facing back of the Seneca sure made for quiet stay.

The Raffaello is a pretty little hotel in a really splendid location. Within easy walking distance to the Hancock, Water Tower Place, dozens of restaurants and, of course, the lake, the hotel could not be in a better spot. My wife and I stayed there three nights over Thanksgiving weekend and had a very pleasant time. Our room was a small suite at the end of a hallway on the sixth floor...very quiet and private. We found our rooms in good order, clean and well stocked. We did not experience long waits for the elevator as many apparently have, so there were no problems coming and going. The entire staff was friendly and personable, from housekeeping to the front desk, to the doormen on duty. Everyone we met was friendly and courteous, including the young woman behind the counter at the doughnut shop just off the lobby. The bacon-maple long-johns were a treat on a chilly, blustery day!
We did experience a couple of minor annoyances: the TV in the living room failed to work properly (the TV in the bedroom worked fine); the stopper for the sink in the bathroom was improperly fitted, and the engineering staff failed to rectify the problem; both the dining and coffee tables were scratched. I consider these relatively minor issues as they did nothing much to inhibit our enjoyment.
I do think that the wifi should be free (as it is in so many hotels) as almost everyone travels with a laptop or ipad these days. We also found room-service meals on the pricey side, the food adequate but uninspired and too expensive.
All in all, it was extremely pleasant to return to our hotel after a stint of shopping. The building's exterior is quite pretty and distinctive, with an appropriately Renaissance flavor including the Medici crest over the front entrance. We were glad not to be returning to some faceless boxlike tower.
We will definitely return to this nice little hotel.

I think this hotel deleted my last review and for that now I give it a two rating. My previous review wasn't even that bad. All I said was that the front desk people weren't the most attentive and that for someone on business, having just room service for breakfast is not optimal when you're on a time schedule. It would be nice if the restaurant were open for breakfast.
Besides that I had decent things to say about the hotel but if they can't take any critiquing, they clearly don't care about the customer's experience.

We took the train into Chicago and took a cab to the Raffaello. When we walked in the door we received a warm and genuine welcome from the concierge that set the tone for the entire visit. Not only was she a great help but every staff member we met made an effort to make our stay pleasant. The location, right next to the Hancock building, is fantastic. It is central to most of the shopping on the Mag MIle, convenient to the restaurants and sites in the downtown area.
The suite rooms were wonderful, clean and comfortable.

Room Tip: The suites are corner rooms and are very roomy.
