“America's boutique hotel?!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 17, 2011

When you are coming from country with 4,5 mil of inhabitants term boutique hotel means something different than in city with more than double inhabitants that your whole country.
„America's boutique“ hotel in more than 20 stories high building situated very closely to the northern part of Michigan avenue, lake and Hancock building which is very important when you are staying in Chicago.
Hotel is old one but clean with typical American rooms (two separate rooms as one, kitchenette, two TV sets, DVD player, docking for the Ipod/IPhone) which is very comfortable for us who are used on EU standards.
On the top of the hotel there is possibility to go out on the roof and get some nice pictures of Chicago landscape.
Conclusion: good value for the money and nice accommodation in the Chicago down town.
For the visitors from abroad- That's was my first time that I bought ticket for the NBA playoff game using Ticketmaster service. I've been afraid how it will function but I just can say all the best! I pay tickets with a credit card, print out the receipt, show at the United center in Chicago and get my ticket in less than 10 minutes. Fast and safe...

I've stayed here a handful of times now while traveling to Chicago for work, the most recent time being early August 2011. The hotel is conveniently located one block behind the Hancock Building, on a relatively quiet side street that is convenient to Michigan Avenue, as well as to the lakefront.

Front desk service has always been prompt and friendly. There's a small bar off the lobby that has coffee in the mornings. I haven't visited the bar, but there are typically a few guests there in the evenings. It looks like a nice place for a quiet drink.

Being an older building, the rooms themselves are on the small side, but appear to have been recently renovated, and are clean and comfortable. For a business trip where I'm not spending time in the room, this place is perfect. My one gripe with the hotel is that the two elevators are both very small. During peak hours, there tends to be a wait, and/or you get to crowd in with others.

Well, this was my daughter's first trip to the city and the Raffaello Hotel helped to make it special for her. A perfect location, very centrally located next to both the Water Tower Place and the Hancock Tower. Our trip to the American Girl Doll store was just 2 blocks away! There are many great restaurants within walking distance of the hotel. We found the staff to be very helpful and courteous and the room was absolutely elegant. We would definitely stay again.

I've never written one of these before, but having visited Chicago a number of times over the past couple years and selecting to stay at a different hotel each time, I've seen what is out there and what you get for your money.
We chose the Raffaello because of its location, and because the deluxe suite seemed to be a good value. We requested an upper floor when we made the reservations, and we were given a room on the 10th floor facing west towards Michigan Avenue, as requested. All good, but our room wasn't ready at 4 pm, the check-in time. We were told several times that it wasn't cleaned yet, and finally were allowed to go up around 4:45 pm. The room was clean, and large, but there were dings and dents and mismatched paint, the carpet seemed dirty with water spots? and in general was a bit dingy. The sofa bed was awful - it sagged in the middle even without our 2 kids in it. Any movement and you could feel the springs/coils and it made a lot of noise. It really was sub-par. The king bed in the room was very nice and my wife and I slept great. We had no trouble with the air conditioning, and the updated bath was nice, probably the nicest thing about the room.
We went to the fitness center and were surprised how small it was - the pictures on-line appear to show many machines, but as it turns out the walls are mirrored and this gives the appearance of more equipment than there is. Still, there was no one there so it was easy to get a work-out in.
Staff was nice and friendly and accommodating overall.
Overall, though, not so great for the money, and probably wouldn't stay there again.

Arriving July 29th around 3:00, a co-worker and I immediately noticed how warm the lobby was and everyone appeared sweaty and red-faced. I asked why it was so warm and was told that the air conditioning was being fixed. We thought we'd go to the roof top to relax, since we couldn't check in till 4:00, and were told it was closed and "under construction". The photo on their website shows a beautiful roof top deck and says nothing about being closed, though the clerk disputed this. So, I guess the "umbrella rentals" refers to the rain type.
The rooms (we had 3) were HOT and smelled musty. After a sleepless night, I complained about the heat and it was insulting to have the clerk act like they didn't notice. She offered to store my luggage and change my room, to which I responded "it's not my room, it's the hotel". She had the nerve to say that no one else had said anything, eventhough I heard numerous guests complaining in the elevators. A housekeeper brought a fan to my room, which helped somewhat. Another guest was told to go to the pharmacy up the street to get a fan and he would be reimbursed. It was a different excuse, problem and timeline for the AC fix, depending on who you spoke with. On the last day, there was a slight cooling effect.
Yes, they have a business office, but there's a charge to use the computer. You can print a boarding pass free, but the printer didn't work.
Why not just MAN UP, admit there were problems, apologize, offer room discounts, free drinks at the bar (which is closed 2 days), fans for everyone...anything that might be respectful of the guests and an effort at customer service!

Thank you for staying at The Raffaello Hotel. Please accept my apology for the inconvenience during your stay. We did encounter a problem with our air condition unit during your stay which caused the hotel to become very hot. We have installed a new unit, and want you to come back. Please contact me directly the next time your travels bring you back to Chicago.

Highest regards,
Jermaine

Stayed 3 nights, July31-Aug 3 2011.

Polite and helpful staff, room was bigger than we had last time @ Club Quarters.
Maid service was very good, they usually came earlier than we were ready for them, but had no problem coming back in the afternoon when we were out.
Awesome location. Great food nearby, and a Walgreens a short walk away. Red line train easy walking distance, Beach an easy walk away too.
Would definitely stay here again, especially with the deal we got ($129 a night CDN)!

We’re thrilled that you chose to write a review about our hotel. You’re right; our location is awesome there’s so much to do shopping, dining, and Oak Street Beach. Plus the Red Line is three block from the hotel which makes it easy to catch a White Sox or Cubs game.

We look forward to having you as our guest in the future.

Highest regards,
Jermaine

We very much enjoyed our stay at the Raffaello Chicago. The location was fantastic -- a block west of Lake Michigan and a block east of Michigan Avenue. The John Hancock building was right outside our window. The room was clean and spacious with modern decor. We had a small refrigerator/mini bar and coffee maker in the room. My parents were traveling with us, and they had a suite which was very nice as well, and was a true one bedroom suite with a door between the bedroom and the sitting area. The only negative thing I can think of to say was that the shower was poorly designed - water got all over the floor - and the elevators were tiny, but that's to be expected in such an old building. We walked to Navy Pier, had lunch at Margaritaville and then took a water taxi to the Shedd Aquarium. We had pizza at Gino's East and cocktails on the 96th floor of the John Hancock building. We took in a Cubs game at Wrigley Field. There is so much to see and do in Chicago, and the train was a short walk from the hotel, so we didn't have to drive anywhere. Would recommend the Raffaello, and would definitely stay here again!
