“Great Staff, shame the hotel's a dump”
Reviewed November 25, 2013

So you are greeted with super happy staff. They seem to be old school, as in been working the industry a long while, very knowledgeable about the area and happy to give recommendations on where to eat. The hotel itself is located of the main shopping road Michigan Avenue

So what's the problem with this place? Well the building is old, Very old| The hotel is crying for a lick of paint and possible new carpet. Basically the hotel is run down, but it's charging similar prices as the top end hotels near it and with a Marriott Courtyard hotel directly opposite you would feel a little short changed. You are paying 4-5 star prices for a motel grade hotel. But it’s the friendly staff that make this place, nothing else !

Thank you for your review. I agree that our staff is very happy to greet our guests as they come and go. They are certainly knowledgeable about the area restaurants, city attractions and tours, public transportation, and what is happening in the city.

I regret you did not find us to be a good value. The Red Roof Inn is an economy hotel and we will never compare to a Marriott Courtyard when it comes to amenities, but then our guests are not paying for them either. We are located in a charming building constructed nearly a century ago. So, yes, our building is old in an charming and historic way.

I would have to disagree with you that we are charging 4 and 5 star prices, but I certainly respect your opinion. Our rates do vary, as they do at any hotel, but we price ourselves considerably lower than the Marriott and every other hotel in the Gold Coast. Our guests are looking for a clean and affordable room that has a five star location and five star service without paying the five star price. I am sorry we did not meet your expectations.

The positive thing is the location. This is right downtown and most you wan to see is ardound the corner. We pad 160 USD per night plus 44 USD for parking during a fair in town. This is way overpriced.

The rooms are ok, but not good. Internet was terrible exept the last day.

The staff at the front desk is nice and helpful.

There is ni breakfast offered, but there are many places close by.

Room Tip: High up -> less noise from the traffic.

Thank you for your review. I understand your point of view, but we are consistently the lowest priced hotel in downtown Chicago. Our rates do fluctuate depending on what is happening in the city and the time of year. This is true for all hotels. When the demand is high, our rates reflect that. If your travel dates are flexible, you can definitely pay less when there isn’t an event happening in the city. Our rates are as low as $49.99 during slower periods.

The Red Roof Inn has a five star location as you noted, but you will always pay a two star price. There is world class shopping on the Magnificent Mile less than a block away, as well as world class dining. If you are not in the mood for a fancy dinner or a relaxed dinner at our restaurant, Coco Pazzo, you can enjoy a slice of our famous Chicago style pizza within easy walking distance.

Parking in a big city is always a premium, but like our rates, our nightly parking fee is less than other hotels in the area. There are several self-park garages nearby for the same rate as we charge for our valet parking, but we offer unlimited in and out privileges, unlike the public garages. Our guests also have the advantage of your car being brought right to them at our entrance. They can load and unload without having to walk several blocks with their belongings.

I do hope we have the opportunity to serve you again in the future.

Red Roof Inn is less than 1 block off of the Michigan Avenue shopping district, and is 4 blocks to the Grand stop on the Red Line subway. We felt safe walking the streets from the subway to the hotel, even late at night. We booked the day before our arrival and received a great rate for downtown Chicago: Fri-$80.99, Sat-$89.99, Sun-$71.99. It is an older hotel so is not fancy if you are looking for that, but the room was clean and in good repair and the bed was comfortable. Our room was a two-bed room, and was plenty big, not a closet-sized room like some Chicago hotels. The view from our room was mostly other high rise downtown buildings, with a limited view of Michigan Avenue down an alley. It is a 100% smoke free property. We had no issues during our 3-day stay. Most rooms have an in-room safe, but there is a $1.50/day charge for its use. There is free WiFi, but we didn't use it so can't say how well it worked. There is a computer and printer in the lobby where you can print your airline boarding pass for free, but other Internet use has a fee. There is no breakfast or coffee in the lobby, but the rooms have a coffeemaker. The Red Roof website says there is an on-site restaurant but we didn't see one, and it also calls the hotel "newly renovated" - hmmm, not sure about that. The website also says they accept pets, but we saw none during our stay, and says parking is $44/day, which is cheap for downtown Chicago. All in all, this hotel was adequate for the price and great location.

Room Tip: Our first room on 2nd floor looked out on roofs, air conditioners and telephone poles. We were move...

Thank you for your review. I am very glad you took advantage of our great rates and our fantastic location. The Red Roof Inn is close to public transportation, so getting here is easy and economical. If you do not feel like walking a few blocks, there are also taxis at every corner to give you a ride.

We will continue to offer budget minded travelers a great value. I am sorry you did not take advantage of our restaurant, Coco Pazzo. It has great Italian cuisine and a good wine list. Hopefully, the next time you stay with us, you can sample their menu.

We stayed there for 3 nights in Sept'13. The hotel itself is good and clean, room has all necessary items such as A/C, TV, coffee machine, fridge. The most amazing is a Location! It's 5 steps away from the Magnificent Mile! So convenient to be right in the haeart of the city and close to all the attractions. Price is also pretty great for the downtown hotel.

WARNING: BEDBUGS

This place should be called the "Bed Bug Inn". I would give this hotel/Inn 0 stars if I could. We checked into the hotel on Saturday night on 11/02/2013 around midnight after an exhausting flight from LA. We were in Chicago on business to attend a trade show. We were checked into room #410. The room itself was grungy, but I over looked it because I was tired. I laid down to go to sleep, felt my self itching about 2 hours into my slumber and it woke me up. I turned on the lights and to my absolute HORROR BED BUGS CRAWLING AROUND ON THE SHEETS AND PILLOWS! I ran into the shower, and collected my belongings and left immediately. The personnel at the front desk upon checkout was less than surprised, she acted as if this is a frequent complaint. She even said she can't give us our money back that we have to collect it through a different route. This was the worst experience of my life, now all of my belongings and luggage are quarantined until I figure out what to do with them to prevent an infestation in my residence. DO NOT STAY HERE, THEY HAVE BEDBUGS.

I sincerely apologize your stay was such an unpleasant one. I understand your dissatisfaction and concern. Bed bugs are not a problem which is caused by the hotel. They are brought in by guests, usually on or in their luggage by hitching a ride on the bags or in the freight boxes in airplane baggage compartments. There is no hotel that can guarantee they never have had bed bugs or never will. Luxury hotels are affected just as often as economy hotels.

Bed bugs have become a national epidemic. The insects have been found in movie theaters, apartment buildings, schools, and retail stores, including more than one store on Michigan Avenue. At Red Roof Inn we are very proactive in conducting daily inspections. In addition, every employee is trained their very first day of hire in bed bug detection. If bed bugs are suspected we take immediate and decisive action to eradicate them. Because of our actions, we have had very few incidents where bed bugs were actually found after being reported.

Red Roof has a No Hassle Guarantee, if you report a problem and we are unable to resolve it to your satisfaction, we do not expect you to pay. Therefore, since you booked through a third party and paid them, we could not refund you directly. The booking site was contacted following your departure and a request for a full refund was approved.

We were very pleased with the location of this hotel in downtown Chicago. Close to everything. We walked everywhere. Hotel is old. Many street noises permeate the room. Bathroom is dated but adequate. We did not spend a lot of time in the room. Staff is very helpful.

The Red Roof Inn was a great little find in the heart of the Magnificent Mile. Priced much lower than other hotels in the area, it's perfect for a solo traveller or couple on a budget. It wasn't perfect - for example, it was a squeeze to get to the right hand side of the bed, the bathroom door didn't close properly, and there was a bit of noise in the corridor from the ice machine, but these are all inconsequential complaints considering the price paid for such a location.

Thank you for your review and letting others know about the great value we offer our guests. We certainly have a five star location for a very affordable price. Our hotel is located in an historic building constructed nearly 100 years ago. With our beautiful turn of the century architecture, comes slightly smaller standard rooms. We do offer larger deluxe rooms at a marginally higher price. Those rooms are equipped with a micro fridge, work desk, chair, and lamp, as well as a lounge chair. All of our rooms offer complimentary Wifi. The deluxe rooms are still a great value and I recommend you try one of them on your next visit.

I look forward to the opportunity to serve you again the next time you are in Chicago.
