I've stayed in Chicago many times... This is the first time I haven't stayed close to Michigan Ave. I really liked the location being near the Merchandise Mart... Tons of restaurants close by... Views of the river... The brown and purple line... And more in with the locals than with the touristy Michigan Ave area...
The hotel itself is nice and the staff was really friendly..and you can't beat having breakfast thrown in and kids eat free for all their meals... Even if you don't get breakfast for free in your reservation.
So..the only drawbacks--the heated indoor pool is really nice and also FREEZING... I know you want a lap pool to be cool... But the primary usage while we were there was families playing. My son wanted to play longer in the pool but when his skin to the touch was COLD i made him get out.
The other drawback is the location. The brown and purple lines pretty much circle the building and they run each way every 15 minutes. There is also a (Metra--think Amtrak) huge train station right across the river that is VERY busy.... So it was unbelievably loud in our room (2220) despite being one floor from the top.
I've been not only to Chicago numerous times but also been to many other major cities.. So I know major cities are 'noisy' and came prepared with the iPad loaded with a great noisemaker app... One that I've used when staying at a hotel next to a major airport, etc.
Even with the iPad volume cranked all the way up to the max and the white noise going... We could still hear the trains. Even when the trains were not running... Another rooms heater kicking on was SUPER loud. We got hardly any sleep over the three nights we were there.
If not for this incredible noise level... We would definitely be back (if they fixed the pool temperature).
Since no one else has mentioned the noise level maybe it was just our room? If you are a very sound sleeper and would just use the pool for a lap pool... Definitely stay here for the great location, price, nice room and friendly staff.
If you are a light sleeper stay closer to Michigan Ave at the Hyatt on Wacker --further away from the trains... But no free breakfast or friendly staff... Just a low room rate and nice room and good location.
