“A short stay at a lovely hotel.”
Reviewed January 5, 2011

My beau and I spent one night in just before Christmas at Hotel71. We had a beautiful room overlooking the river. Comfortable bed, amazing pillows, upscale amenities. The room was spacious, large bathroom with separate tub (jacuzzi jets would have made it perfect) and stand up shower, in-room coffee maker. The location was fabulous - steps from Michigan Ave, a few blocks from Milennium Park and $7 cab ride to the Hancock Bldg.
We took advantage of their 25% off early booking so we got a great rate. Parking is pricey, but there are two self-park lots a very short distance away. The one right next door closes at 5pm but is half the rate of the hotel. We had a cocktail at the bar - pleasant bartender. The staff was very friendly.
Overall it was just terrific.

I'll be frank, we loved our stay here, the guest service was fantastic, the location is nearly unbeatable. We appreciated what a great value it was and everything was spotless. What was wrong with this was they have top notch everything but the quality of the rooms, if not the bizarre room layouts, but the peeling wallpaper everything seemed dated and out of sync with the rest of our stay here. With a great revamp of the inside it will match the service of the outside.

My stay was from Thursday December 30th, and checking out on Saturday January 1st 2011.
The stay from Thursday to Friday was ok, (by ok I mean mediocre not great or outstanding).
But the real problem started on New Year’s Eve. The hotel rented rooms out to 6,8,even 10 people at a time! These people ranged in age from 21-25 and were more obnoxious than a frat house!
Then the real issue occurred. The elevators were broken when we checked in on Thursday. By Friday, the Hotel was at capacity and it was getting difficult to catch an elevator without waiting 10-15 minutes.

The final straw and WORST hotel experience of my life was Sat morning when we were checking out of the hotel. We waited 40 MINUTES for an elevator with our baggage.
Once we realized that we were not going to catch an elevator, and we were going to miss our flight, we decided to take the stairs.
We walked 29 FLIGHTS of stairs with 160 LBS of BAGGAGE!!!!

Let this story be a warning, this Hotel 71 is the worst I’ve stayed in while in Chicago. I stay in at least 3-4 hotels a year in Chicago since my family is there and I enjoy checking out all Chicago has to offer. I will never return and never refer to even my worst enemy.

Wonderful location and super close to the L Train, Magnificent Mile, Riverboat Tours and within walking distance to Navy Pier, etc. Awesome service, very willing to help and answer questions. We had a room with the river view and it was gorgeous. Will definitely stay here again. Only negative thing we encountered was the elevators are quite slow, but it was nothing that was going to overshadow the rest of the hotel.

We stayed here for 3 nights during our mini getaway to Chicago. We are EXTREMELY picky about the hotel we stay in (especially with the recent bedbug outbreaks). After much research we decided on this hotel.

I was really impressed with the room. We booked a city view (cheaper than a river view, but we got a river view anyway). They gave us a beautiful room on the 27th floor which happened to be a corner room....2 walls FULL of windows. One wall gave us the "city view" which was of some beautiful architectural buildings (my bf is a photographer and went nuts taking pictures of the building elements from our windows) and the other wall gave us a view of the river and some more buildings. Really nice view!

The room was clean and big enough (not huge, but you don't need a room any bigger for 2 people). The bathroom was also clean and attractive.

This place is a GREAT location as well. All main attractions are a 30 minute walk, or a $5 cab ride. We arrived by train and it cost about $5 to get to our hotel by cab. We also cabbed it to the Aquarium & Natural History museum, and Navy Pier...both $5. We walked to Millennium Park and Hancock Tower (5 min and 30 min walks), and it is right at the south end of the Magnificent Mile.

The staff at the front desk were EXTREMELY polite and cheerful at all times!

The only complaints I have are the following:
- The room was extremely cold. There is a thermostat that you can control your room temperature but I didn't figure it out until the next day. We left a $5 tip with a little note for the housekeeper asking for an extra blanket. When we came back, the money was GONE, but NO BLANKET! We called down to the front desk explaining the situation, and we had to call 2X (45 minutes apart), wait another 30 minutes, then go down to the front desk and ask for the blanket AGAIN. VERY frustrating.
- Not only did the housekeeper take our money without providing that little extra step of giving us an extra blanket, but they left garbage (including our note that we had written our request on) all over the floor in the room foyer. The next day, there was a HUGE wet spot in our room foyer that I ended up stepping in and hand to change my socks.
- last complaint about housekeeping...they took FOREVER to clean our rooms! Even with the sign on the door requesting service, we would come back around 4 pm, and the room still wouldn't be cleaned. SO frustrating because we'd have to leave again because we didn't want to be there when they were cleaning the room.

Complaints aside, the place was kept pretty clean, the service was pretty great, the location is PRIME, and it was a really good deal for what we were given. We'd definitely stay there again.

I've stayed at Hotel 71 twice, and will definitely stay there again next time I visit Chicago. The location is perfect for experiencing the beautiful tourist-oriented parts of the city. Walk outside in the morning, and hit the cafe next door for breakfast, and then walk over to the lakefront or the Art Institute.

The rooms are spacious and modern, and the view is spectacular. Overall, it's clean and contemporary, but probably not ideal if you have small children looking for recreation within the hotel.
