This is the place to stay if you need a hotel from where you can walk to Chicago's attractions, restaurants and shops. For a Dane, the rooms are big and service is excellent, but for an American, I think this is business as usual. Drawback: When you enter the room, you need a place to hang your coat (which was wet most days). The wardrobe is in the bathroom which I consider strange, but which is not unusual in the US.

Room Tip: The fintness facilities are very good

Stayed in Chicago for the first time recently and booked Hotel 71 for the location. Turned out to be a great choice. Check in and check out were seamless, staff were very friendly, although we didnt need to contact reception for anything! Room was very spacious, free wifi very handy. A great base for a stay in Chicago if you are there on holiday and need somewhere close to shopping, bus tour, sights etc. We walked most places and really enjoyed the city.

My husband and I traveled to Chicago for a family wedding that was held at Hotel 71. The room I booked was a ‘city view’. I was sadly disappointed when going into the room to find that our city view was the backside of surrounding buildings with elaborate fire escapes and about a dozen dumpsters scattered on the ground behind them. My initial thought was, (correct or not – I don’t know) “okay, we have a discounted room for the wedding guests – that must mean we were given the less desirable rooms’. The room itself was spacious, as well as the bathroom with the separate tub and glass enclosed shower with the rain shower-head.

We unpacked a few things turned the TV onto a local station – something we enjoy checking for local information. The picture was horrible! I’ve heard about the snow in Chicago, but didn’t expect it obscuring the hotel TV screen. To the hotel’s credit, engineering/maintenance staff came to the room within short minutes of our call. He tried various adjustments and a new splicer – but nothing made the picture better. When he said they would give us another room, I readily agreed. The move was easy – we went across the hall into a mirror image room – except this had a delightful river view and the TV was just fine.

Constructed in the 1950’s, Hotel 71 shows a little age. Even being an older hotel, the bed was comfy and the free Internet connection useful. The hotel location was terrific for walking and exploring Chicago. If you don’t want to walk, the L is nearby and there was no shortage of taxis. Front desk staff readily answered questions and suggested excellent places to visit with the time constraints we faced with scheduled family events. And the small business center was perfect for printing our boarding passes.

The wedding and reception were lovely in the Ballroom with panoramic views of the city. The hotel catered hor d’oeuvres and dinner were nicely prepared and served.

I look forward to returning to Chicago, staying (in a river view room) and exploring more of the city.

Room Tip: River view rooms are the most visually interesting. If you are on floors higher than 30 you may hav...

Its location is superb, close to Mag Mile, Millenium Park and the Art Museum of Chicago. Stayed in a city-view room and was not disappointed (stunning views, comfy rooms and nice decor), they have free wi-fi so you're always connected. The L's nearest station is just a few blocks away and the area is pretty safe. Helpful and friendly staff everyday, what else could someone ask for? I recommend this hotel a 100%.

Room Tip: Ask for a city view room. If you have more budget, you have to get a river view room.

This was my first time in Chicago. The hotel is centrally located, and the views are great. Travelled with my daughter. Our room was huge, amenities were great. I would definitely stay at Hotel 71 again.

Because when you give a hotel a good review, it just makes it more difficult to get a room next time you are in town. Great Location, Great Staff, even upgraded our room for my wife and I.
In town for the Marathon, needed a good nights sleep and got it. (they even had a breakfast spread at 5am for us runners, very cool!!!) We didn't get a river view, which was minor disappointment, but who spends their time looking out the window, when you can take about 10 steps outside and be staring at the river and Michigan avenue.

Great value compared to other hotels in the area. Top Notch. Good job Hotel 71, you guys do it right!

Room Tip: ask for view if it's really important to you- Given the choice between having a suite or a view...

Stayed here during September based on the previous reviews on Trip Advisor and it lived up to our expectations and more. As my title suggests this hotel really has one of the best locations in downtown Chicago, we could not have asked for better. The staff are very friendly and very welcoming, check in was a breeze and our room was excellent with a great view of the Chicago river. Whilst we did not use the hotel restaurant it always appeared busy which is a good sign , we did use the bar and again the staff here were a credit to the hotel. If we were returning to the beautiful city which Chicago is I would have no hesitation booking a room here. I rate it very highly indeed.

Room Tip: Try for a room with a river view
