Great hotel in the middle of all the action. Amazing view of the river. Very short walk to access water taxis and river walk. Short walk to the Navy Pier. Great in house restaurant with street level seating. Great for watching the city going by. Rooms are nice. Valet parking right at hotel is very convinient.

The Hotel 71 provided a beautiful upscale hotel in the perfect location for walking Chicago. The Hotel 71 service was 4 star! We had flown overnight and they checked us into our room early so we could get some rest before starting our adventure. The staff helped us with items we had forgotten, directions around town and reservations for dinner. We could not have asked more more gracious assistance. The rooms are large and well appointed. The bathroom was also roomy and had a luxurious feel. The lobby and bar are updated, contemporary without being cold. The only challenge is the expense of parking which is due to the downtown location. They did offer us some less costly options which we appreciated! We cannot wait to go back and we will certainly stay at the Hotel 71 again. Make sure you also walk down Michigan Avenue to the right and visit the brand new popcorn place called Sticky Fingers. The popcorn fits the name but it is delicious and you don't have to wait in line at the more established one down the street.

Hotel 71 is great! It's only about 2 blocks away from a train stop, so even in the bitter cold, it's manageable. The hotel itself is very hip and modern. Employees were great and helpful. The view we had was incredible. We were right across the street from the corn cob buildings, and Hotel 71 itself is where 'The Dark Knight' was filmed. Michigan Ave. is just a 2 block walk, and the theater district is about 2 blocks in the opposite direction so everything is very conveniently located. Would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask the concierge to get a room on a higher floor; limits noise and great view

I stayed at Hotel 71 for a weekend and thought it was a great place to stay. The location was fantastic, right on the river, a block off of Michigan Avenue. The room was a good size, very clean, with great modern design features. The bed was very comfortable, with nice sheets and lots of pillows. The room featured free wi-fi, a flat screen TV, iPod dock, a coffee/tea maker, a rain shower, nice orange-scented bath products, and best of all, all of the lights were dimmable. There was no perceptible street noise, but noise from the hallway was sometimes a problem. Overall, I thought that this was a good value for a great hotel. I would definitely stay here again.

I am writing this review now because the movie Transformers 3 just hit the theaters and it was being filmed right outside our hotel when we were there. This was my second time at Hotel 71 the first was booked for me by Amtrak vacations. This time I asked for the hotel after having a bad stay at another hotel in Chicago. I love this hotel the rooms are spacious and clean, the views of the river are beautiful especially at night, the staff is friendly, and the location makes it perfect. I can walk from Hotel 71 to Navy Pier or to Buckingham Fountain it has a nice central location but is not overly priced.

Room Tip: Both times I have had river views and would ask for that.

The hotel is a modern, tall and beautiful building. It is located right on the Chicago River and has a beautiful view.
The rooms are spacious and the furniture is pretty new.
The problem that I had with the hotel started with the upkeeping of it. Soiled sheets. Smelly pillows. Dust bunnies hiding everywhere. It looked like for a long time the cleaning people just vacuumed where it was comfortable for them to clean but didn't make any effort to get the room really clean.
The walls and doors are thin. Which means that you will hear your neighbors that are having a fun vacation and your neighbors who are having a terrible time(if you know what I mean)
The next problem is the restaurant. Because of the hot weather I ended up dining there twice. The portions are large and they are very attractive. They sure put a lot of thought into presentation.
Flavors, however, are a different subject altogether. My medium rare cheeseburger was so dry and the sliders I had the following day were just awful. I stayed up until 4 in the morning trying to digest them.
The staff in the restaurant is rude and seemed more interested in flirting with each other than paying attention to customers. I am all for a healthy, happy work environment but if I am choking on that dry burger and need water, I want somebody to pay attention.
So altogether this is a good hotel. They just need to work on the cleaning people and fix up the food and service in the restaurant

I'm afraid that my review of this hotel suffers from direct comparison to another Chicago hotel (the Amalfi) where I had stayed just one week prior to my stay at Hotel 71. Both hotels are in essentially the same location (really just across the river from each other) but Hotel 71 was slightly more expensive than the Amalfi and I failed to see why. In fact, even if the price tags were exactly the same, I think I would chose the Amalfi over Hotel 71 in the future.

This is not to say that Hotel 71 was not a good hotel, in fact we had a very positive experience there. But the Amalfi seemed to be just a notch above in several areas, which left me wondering why I was paying more money. From reading some of the other Trip Advisor reviews it is likely that I was simply in the yet-to-be-refurbished section of the hotel, but then again, why the higher price?

To break it down, Hotel 71 had much nicer views from the windows, and I guess if that is important to you, you should pick this hotel. However, the Amalfi's rooms were more comfortable & up to date (again, this may change soon), had a minibar, bottled water, and fresh cookies in the room upon arrival, and provided complimentary breakfast. The extras at the Amalfi really added up and made Hotel 71 look a bit basic, especially given that I was paying more.

Room Tip: River View rooms offer stunning views of the Chicago River.
