“Beautiful old hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 23, 2014

Stayed here in January 2014 for a work party. We booked the standard king room on the 22nd floor. We didn't have much of a view, but we weren't really in the room much more than sleeping and getting ready. The lobby and ballroom areas are astounding. Amazing dramatic ceilings with beautiful architecture. The bed was comfortable, but the heater didn't turn off, even after setting the temperature at 68*. We ended up sleeping with our window open the whole night and still being very warm. The water pressure was surprisingly good for being on the 22nd floor. No problem with warm water either, and there was some sort of basketball tournament staying in the hotel as well. Only problem was the parking. The self park was "full" so the only option was $68 for valet and they parked my car outside on some surface lot. It was covered in snow when it came back in the morning. This is a great location if you're going to spending lots of time in the loop / millennium park area. If you're looking for an alternative to breakfast, check out Yolk, about 4 blocks south.

Room Tip: As with all hotels downtown Chicago, you pay a premium for a room with a view.

Location is GREAT for museums, etc. The lobby definitely reflects the grandeur. The staff is wonderful and accommodating. My room and the rooms of two of my colleagues who also traveled for business were very disappointing. While clean (i.e. not a housekeeping issue, they like the rest of the staff are wonderful), there were issues with lights working, bathroom fixtures detaching, and no control of the heat. Be prepared that you are in the city, so if you are placed with windows off Michigan Avenue, you will hear lots of traffic. I expected better.

Stayed in the basic hotel room. Quiet, clean, comfortable. All of the support staff were terrific-responsive, up-beat and helpful. I would definitely stay here when visiting Chicago again and just wanted a good, reliable hotel to sleep at.

I stayed at this Hilton while attending a convention. We chose this hotel because it was fairly close by shuttle or taxi to the convention center. The room was clean and fairly basic. It was a large room. The beds were comfortable. For me, the downfall was location, which I should have investigated more prior to the trip, but there is not much to do immediately around hotel especially at night. There are some restaurants a block over but with the exception of Lou Minaldi's, nothing to speak of. We had to take transportation everywhere. There is a subway stop a block over but with winter in Chicago, a short walk can be uncomfortable. The main issue I had with this property was the staff. They were not very helpful or friendly. When we arrived we asked the front desk for restaurant suggestions. She pushed the hotel restaurant and the Irish Pub and told us that everything around them was closed already. It was 8 pm. We decided to eat at the Irish pub but the menu was mostly bar food so we ended up in the Hilton lobby restaurant. Our server was very abrasive and kind of intimidating. The pasta my friend ordered was tasteless so she sent it back without a hassle. Our server was efficient but not friendly. Overall I would not stay here again. It just seemed blah!

We were in town for a volleyball tournament at the McCormick Place. The tournament requires you to stay in town and we did not have a choice of hotel. You stay where they tell you. There were other teams at the hotel in addition to a conference. Our room was on the 25th floor and had a straight on view of another part of the hotel, but if you looked to the left you could see downtown and the Willis Tower. Even though we were 25 floors up, there was a constant noise from the trains, day and night. The room was clean, a decent size and had two bathrooms. Beds were soft, but not queens. We had a negotiated rate of $99 plus $20/night for self-parking, which seemed like a great deal. We checked in (Saturday) at check-in time only to find the self-park lot full. So we had to use their valet parking option for $68 a night!! What?? Told the bellman that we had a parking rate of $20, but he said that it’s only if the self-park lot has room. He said many people were complaining and we should bring it up with the front desk. How could the lot be full on a Saturday afternoon at check in time? We tried to grab a luggage cart that was there but were told we couldn’t use it unless we were using the bellhop’s services. OK not a good first couple of minutes. Got to the desk and complained about the parking and two different desk clerks gave us the same answer that the bellman used. People from our team that checked in after us ignored the self-park lot full sign and were able to find parking spots. Interesting. Lugged all of our stuff to the room. No refrigerator (which we knew), charge for Wi-Fi, though we were somehow able to get it on our phones. We went out for dinner and when we came back, the self-park lot was now open! Hmmm. So we asked at the desk if we could get our car out of valet and moved to self-park and the desk clerk said we could. They couldn’t have told us this before? I called the valet number and was told it would be $38 to get my car out. I asked again at the desk and was told there shouldn’t be this $38 charge. We were able to tell some of the others to get their cars out of valet and moved to self-park. So after all of that trouble, we only had to pay to $20/night to park. Breakfast was not included (knew that too). Cant imagine how expensive the little lobby restaurant was. The next morning I tried to make coffee in the room but the coffee maker stopped half-way through. The non-refrigerated creamer was curdled. OK, so no coffee. Went downstairs to get some and it was $4 for a large. My wife went to use the workout room but there was an extra charge for that. OK, no workout. The kids were able to use the pool for free! One couple did go to the bar and a domestic beer and glass of wine was $22. On our last day we weren’t sure of the volleyball schedule after the first game and weren’t sure if we should check out before going to the games. Well, there is a late check-out option, but they charge you for that and you can store your bags for $2 a bag. I know I was staying at a Hilton and near downtown Chicago, but why is there this need to charge EXTRA for almost everything? I was very turned off by this. For comparison, we stayed at a Quality Inn in downtown New Orleans close to the French Quarter over Christmas. Parking was $17 a night (though they discounted it to $15 for us), free Wi-Fi, free breakfast, free fitness center, the room had queen beds and a microwave and refrigerator. We stored our stuff on a luggage cart for the afternoon after checking out and NO charge. The Quality Inn staff would bend over backwards to make you feel at home. At the Hilton, it seemed like the hotel's mission was to try and get as much money out of you as possible. This is what brought the rating way down. If you are OK with this, then it would be OK to stay here.

Really enjoyed our stay for our son's hockey tourney. Very nice place.. great location. Service was very acceptable. We were upgraded because of number of kids, they did not charge us! very classy. Close to everything. If your staying in Chicago, I would stay here again. Shopping close, good food, everything close by. Enjoyed it. Price is very reasonable for location.

This hotel was very beautiful and clean. The in room coffee was also delicious. Beds were very comfortable and room was quiet. The bar, Irish Pub, and convenient store made the hotel more appealing. My only complaint was some minor details that were overlooked, but the moment I brought it up to management they corrected it. Overall great hotel!
