“nice view”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 3, 2012

stayed 4 nights: big room, nice view of lake and great location. Leaky toilet, moldy smell in BR, and a few other minor issues: Room could be cleaner. Forget room service: advised of 90 minute delay, ran out of menu items ( out of salmon in chicago? really?) . Very professional and helpful hotel staff. The banquet catering was good. Expected more attention to details of room cleanliness and appearance considering the Hilton reputation and historic hotel. I give them credit for their ability to handle large crowds/meetings.

Room Tip: lake view rooms have great windows. Specify if you don't want a murphy bed set up.

This was my husband and I first visit to Chicago and we really did not know what to expect, but we had a blast and relaxing stay. The Hilton Chicago is a gorgeous and elegant hotel. Our room was huge, clean, comfortable, and with a breath taking view. We had five windows in our room with a view of Lake Michigan from each. We also had a view of Grant Park, Soldier Stadium, and the museum. Not only was the hotel a beautiful experience, the staff was amazing. Everyone we encountered was friendly, accommodating, and professional. Although all the staff was great, there were two staff that was outstanding and went over and beyond to make sure our stay at the Hilton Chicago was the best. The first person we encountered when we arrived was Alicia, guest service agent. She is the sweetest person with a welcoming smile. We were so tired after our early morning travel, but Alicia put a smile on our faces that lasted throughout the trip. Words cannot describe her beautiful and warm personality. Thank you Alicia. The second person we encountered was Antonio. Antonio is an energetic young man who is full of life. He assisted us with our bags and you can tell that this young man takes great pride in his job. That was refreshing to see. I would highly recommend this hotel, because it is truly a 5 star. I have read the other reviews and it is unfortunate that some did not share my experience, because in my opinion a bad experience is not the norm for this beautiful hotel and the warm, beautiful staff.

stayed here 2 nights, old but very nice hotel. check in was very smooth, great job Lisa.
in my opinion, the hotel losses its exclusiveness by having too many shops at the lobby.
Lobby was always busy.
room was big with 2 bathrooms. housekeeping left used towel next to one of the queenbeds.
windows were dirty.
staffs were always friendly.

First off location is great. Beautiful lobby, great bar wait staff and restaurant. Now the bad. Way overpriced for what you get. Rooms were not clean we still had the prior quests food in the fridge, great view windows were dirty. Hunted down a housekeeper who handed me a towel and window cleaner to clean it. The gave one towel per guest and that's it. The second bathroom in our room was small and the shower was so tiny there is no way a man could even use it. Very dated room with outlets that kept popping. This hotel needs some work.

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are delighted to hear your appreciation of our lobby and staff. Please accept our sincerest apology for any disappointments you experienced during your stay. Our goal is to always provide the finest in guest services and from what I understand we failed to do so in this instance. Please be assured, your experience is not typical standards of the Hilton Chicago.
Please allow me to take this opportunity to inform you of a renovations project we recently underwent that included some of our guestroom accommodations. This project brought new modern rooms with added amenities such as an in-room safe and refrigerator. We hope you visit us again and experience a newly renovated room.
We truly hope you will allow us future opportunity to serve you again in the true spirit of hospitality for which Hilton Hotels are known.

Sincerely,

I paid an extra $25 or so at check-in to be upgraded to a business suite as the lady offered this - which meant free internet and 2 bathrooms and on a floor that had been renovated. So then, in the room is a console (screen/keyboard/mouse) that you can use to check info about the hotel and uh.... view the internet. It states very clearly that internet usage on this console is not included in any room package - so if you want internet to be free - bring your own device or pay twice. We had our iPad and were able to use internet WiFi no problem.

Later we enquired about getting some washing done - and were told the hotel could do it for us and charge per item - and that they could not refer us to a laundromat nearby - "there are none". So we checked the prices for washing and it was like $10 for a shirt (ironed) and $4 for a pair of socks. Needless to say we did not do washing in Chicago. Instead, at our next hotel in Washington DC they had a huge washer and a huge dryer for guests to use for $2 per load. So we did our washing in Washington for the price of a pair of socks at this sad establishment.

Onto the room itself. There are kind of wings to this building - or like deep recesses - between sections. We scored the sides of a recess so were opposite other rooms - privacy could be achieved by closing the blinds/curtains. The external bricks of the hotel are dark brown and don't throw much light at all. The interior decorators of our renovated room saw fit to decorate everything internally in dark tones - furnishings, walls, beds. The combination meant that you were sitting in a pool of gloom looking out onto other rooms and brown brick. Very, very depressing rooms.

The layout of the room was pretty bad. 2 double beds in the middle with not much room to walk around them. An armchair and table next to a window in one corner. There are big walk-in cupboards that you won't use - and would be better to take this space and do something with it.

The towel rail in our bathroom was loose and precariously balanced - as in - don't touch it because it will fall off the wall. Apart from that the 2 bathrooms were adequate and clean. Our room was clean and the beds were comfortable. The TV was good - high definition and easy to control. The hotel has some interesting, old, ornate common areas - particularly the front entrance and the ballrooms. They are worth a look if you happen to be in the area, but I would suggest that you don't stay the night. The ATM in the lobby does not charge a transaction fee for withdrawals (we bank in Australia) so that was a plus. Clearly Hilton need to work on this - an opportunity lost to grab a few more dollars has been missed!

There's a convenience snack store next to that where you can grab sandwiches, drinks etc. Well be prepared to pay $7 for a small tub of yoghurt, $9 for a sandwich etc. You get the idea. We did this and they were good and fresh - but you are paying for the shelf because at those prices the turnover is going to be low and throw out un-sold rate high.

On leaving, they will store your luggage for $2 a piece. We had 3 pieces to store. Other hotels I stayed in ALL stored luggage for no extra charge.

Hotel location is great. Chicago is a great city (our first time there) and we enjoyed our visit despite the depressing room and money milking tactics.

Room Tip: To secure a good room - stay elsewhere.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are pleased to hear you found our location great and the beds comfortable. Please accept our sincerest apology for any disappointments you experienced. We have had positive reviews on our renovations and are sorry to hear you found the room depressing and did not enjoy the layout of your guestroom.
Please be assured, we work hard to maintain one of the most competitive pricings for the downtown area which enables us to pass along the best possible savings to all our valued guests on amenities such as luggage, laundry and internet just to mention a few. Also, please allow me the opportunity to inform you that as of January 1, 2012, we started offering free internet in our lobby area and restaurants.
We truly hope you will allow us future opportunity to serve you again in the true spirit of hospitality for which Hilton Hotels are known.

Sincerely,

Stayed in the hotel for 2 nights and did not regret it. They don't make grand hotels like this anymore! The rooms were large and the beds comfortable. We stayed on the executive floor which gave us free breakfast and evening snacks. The concierge was very knowledgeable and both check in and check out were speedy. If you are staying there while dropping off students at nearby colleges always ask for the college rate, as it was less than half of the rack rate.
The restaurant in the hotel were pricy, but the food was very good. The pool was small, but usable and had a good viiew of the Chicago skyline. We would stay there again.

Room Tip: Always ask if you can have a free upgrade. The worst they can say is no... ;-)

This is a very large hotel, aim primarily at a corporate market. However, it comes at a reasonable price and the building has alot of history. We upgraded to a lake view room and were very happy with all aspects of the room. The service provided by all staff was friendly and prompt. The location was great and watching the sun rise over Lake Michigan was pretty. We would happy return to this hotel and would recommend it.
