Stayed here at the start of our Route 66 adventure. Had 2 nights here and found it a great location for exploring Chicago. Sightseeing buses pass right outside the front of the hotel which is a great way to see the city if you are short on time like we were.

The hotel is comfortable although I must admit we didnt use any of the facilities as we were short on time. Rooms were adequate although somewhat dark and dreary as are the corridors, which doesnt give you the best feeling (it does make you want to get outside though). Beds comfortable enough and we did have a couple of good nights sleep.

Sadly there was only one lift working whilst we were there and it was very slow which meant there was often a queue or it stopped at most floors.

Overall an adequate hotel for a budget but does appear very dated.

We stayed in the Essex inn in October this year and it was everything you need for a great stay downtown Chicago. The staff were very welcoming and helpful on arrival and our room on the top floor was immaculately clean, extremely comfortable and warm with fantastic views looking across to Lake Michigan. We chose to have breakfast in the Brasserie attached to the hotel and it was perfect. The menu was excellent with plenty of variety and staff working there were pleasant, helpful and knowledgeable about the city. Taxis were booked quickly if required and the concierge was really pleasant and helpful. Thank you for an excellent stay in Chicago.

Three things I look for in a decent hotel. Cleanliness, shower and bed.
It was clean. The shower only had warm water. The sink never drained, which was smaller than my wet bar. I have never seen such a tiny bath room. The bed was Ok. The heat in the room was terrible. Could never adjust it properly. Décor is stuck in the 60's. The only thing is the view of Lake Michigan, Grant Park, Navy Pier, and the Museum campus. If you are looking for something cheap for downtown Chicago, this is probably the place.

Everyone was telling me not to stay at this hotel but I'm glad I did! The location was great. We were close to the museums and we had the 3 day trolley pass which picked up and dropped off right next door at the hilton! Staff was nice and helpful. Room was a good size and the pool was nice all though a little cold. Overall it was a good weekend hotel!

We stayed here for a long weekend in mid-December after we bought a Groupon. The Essex is very close to the museum campus, totally walkable, even in the cold. Mag Mile is a bit further away, but the hotel has a free shuttle. The stay came with free Field museum passes which was a nice bonus. We were given a corner room facing the Sears Tower which was great. The hotel was fairly quiet and the attached restaurant was pretty decent with a nice wait staff. Would stay here again.
