“Pleasantly Surprised”
Reviewed November 9, 2013

I was pleasantly surprised by my Essex stay. The reviews have been mixed so I was prepared for the worst. The hotel has clearly been remodeled recently and while it is by no means ornate, it has pleasant "vibe" to it. The room was larger than I expected (again, given the reviews). I've stayed at other hotels in downtown Chicago at twice the price and had smaller rooms. The toilet and the bath tub where the only 2 fixtures which had not been replaced. The toilet might be a bit small for a larger person that me. Clearly people were smaller when the hotel was originally built. Basic internet service was included with the room, so I could check email for free. Watching NFL video highlights, however, required purchasing a $8.95 upgrade. Overall a very good experience if opulence is not a requirement.

Room Tip: All rooms that end in "06" are across from the elevators. For example, my room was 1506...

We stayed two nights. We had two rooms. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The rooms were a bit worn, one room had a non-functional outlet, and the shower was weak in one room, but I'd recommend the hotel overall.

My husband & I stayed here with our 2 kids. Location is walking distance to the Shedd Aquarium and Field Museum. Hotel staff was very friendly and helpful and the pool was really nice too. Our room was clean and well-kept, but HOT. Not sure why it was so warm in there. We called and complained, maintence came to fix the heat, but it didn't help. That was our only complaint with the hotel.

Me and my boyfriend stayed here for 8 nights. We took a deal on Hotwire, so considering that price the value was okay. Had we paid the listed price I think we would have been disappointed, although the hotel prices in Chicago are quite high.

Our first room was a double room on the fifth floor facing E 8th St, which was quite allright other than the separate beds -issue. We asked if it was possible to change rooms, the service was friendly and we got a queen room on 14th floor in the corner of the building, so we were looking at both the Wabash Ave and E 8th St. At first we were excited, but soon we found out two things: the L-train noise is very loud and also it was really hot in the room. It was explained that because of the age and building technique of the hotel there's either warming or cooling on in the entire hotel, depending on the season, and it can't be adjusted in any room individually.

I don't really know why we didn't ask to change the room once again, I guess we were just too lazy and that's on us... But I would recommend trying rooms facing maybe Michigan Ave or the 8th or 9th St. The location in itself was ok, but I think Near North Side would be the best location to stay on a tourist trip, also all the trains run underground there so possibly it's less noisy there.

We went to the gym a few times, it was actually quite well equipped. Didn't try the pool, but the area was clean.

Room Tip: Rooms facing Wabash Ave get a lot of L-noise, but I'm not sure Michigan Ave would be much quiete...

My Wife and I stayed for a couple of nights after a trip across from Seattle on the "Empire Builder" ( See seperate review) the check in was painless and the staff were very helpfull. The room we had was at the front of the hotel and about half way up. The room was very clean and pleasant. We ate in the Bar/Restuarant that was attached to the Hotel but found it a bit strange that we were not allowed to take an alcaholic drink from the bar up to our room as the bar was not owned by the hotel!! We asked the concierge for things to do and he could not have been any more helpfull recommending the "Architecture Tour" by boat which was very good. All in all a great time and one I would recommend to anyone.

Visited Chicago in early September during a heatwave (94 degrees at 18.40 in the afternoon) The hotel was cool and clean, a great welcome at reception, and our room was spacious, with king bed, TV, ironing board, filter coffee maker, safe etc Bathroom spotless, beds made up daily with fresh towels, shampoo, lotions etc replaced each morning. Located at the end of University District, quite easy to get to via bus or metro. Restaurants and bars within walking distance and you only have to ask at reception and they will book a taxi for you and were very helpful in recommending places to visit, eat and drink.

We stayed at the Essex Inn hotel during the ASIS Convention in September. We walked to McCormick Place each day, walking along the lake on our way back to the hotel. Very close to many attractions, restaurants and shopping. Our room had a view of the Willis Tower and the lake, very nice setting. We also walked to the Navy Pier and the Willis Tower from the hotel. The Navy Pier might be too far to walk for some people, but it's a lot of fun if you go through the parks. Be sure to check out the river walk.
