“Great nights sleep!”
Reviewed June 14, 2013 via mobile

Very plush hotel room, clean, tidy hotel, pleasant and friendly team, best nights sleep I've had in ages! Would have tried the brasserie as the menu looked fantastic but was already out and about so ate elsewhere. Highly recommend the hotel, shame the valet partings quite expensive though.

The hotel we had booked The Hampton Majestic let us down at the last minute due to computer glitch. The Travel Agent moved us to the Essex Inn. The staff were amazing and upgraded us to a magnificent suite on 11th Floor overlooking Lake Michigan. The room was very comfortable the hotel is in a fantastic position and the breakfasts were a fabulous start to any day. Having just been refurbished the whole ambience on entering was perfect. Cannot praise friendliness of Staff enough Jael, Brian and Jose to name just a few. The only complaint and it is not major is that the bathroom was exceptionally small although completely functional.

Room Tip: The higher the better and facing Lake Michigan

It was my first time staying at the Essex and it won't be the last. I've visited Chicago 1-2x a year for the last 9 years, so I've tried several hotels in the area.

Entering the hotel, the lobby is fresh, open and has plenty of space to sit and relax. The front desk staff was efficient and friendly, allowing me an early check in. I was delighted with my park/lake view room on the 15th floor! Comfy bed, nice little reading lights incorporated into the headboard, small but adequate bathroom and clean overall. Each floor is named after an artist or art form, with a few prints in the hallways near the elevators as illustration. (also exemplified in the rooms). After enjoying too much of Chicago's fine food, I walked the stairs to the top one afternoon, stopping to see which artist was featured at each floor. It was good exercise and interesting, but no match for my visit to the Art Institute, which was an easy walk from the hotel. Cezanne, Matisse, Monet, Rodin . . . oh my! What a great collection. What a great museum!

Taxis were easily hailed from the hotel. The Brasserie LM, attached to the Essex, was a convenient place to eat with good French style food, a kid's menu and a full bar. Caribou Coffee is a block away and there's an active bar/restaurant at Kitty O'Shea's across the street.

And the final touch, that made a difference to me as a single traveler (and who wouldn't enjoy this?) ... every time I left or entered the hotel, the front desk staff cheerily welcomed me or wished me a good day. I have to admit, it felt good.

Room Tip: Upper floors, facing Michigan Ave can't be beat. I never heard any noise other than what came ou...

We came to visit Chicago to attend the Blues Fest.

The Bus from Detroit arrived early at the Essex Inn not all of the rooms were ready. But that was O.K. The staff was friendly and professional and willing to help however they could. The lobby was pleasant and clean. We were able to sit for a moment and look at the hustle and bustle of Chicago. I shared a room with a friend. The room was clean and the bed comfy. The view was sunny. The only thing I can say was the little sink was clogged. It was just a one nite stay but very nice. I would indeed come back to this Inn.
The Blues Fest was wonderful.

We stayed here for a fun girls weekend in March. The hotel had some construction going on, but we were not bothered by any of it. We were within walking distance to our main trip plans, which were the Shedd Aquarium and the Field Museum. The beds were comfy, the room was quiet, and we had a great time, planning to come back to this hotel. The restaurant in the hotel was outstanding. We were greeted by very friendly staff and the food was good, reasonably priced and filling. The pool was a bit chillier than we would have liked but it was a good time, big enough for more than just a few people and the view was fun. You could even go outside of the pool area to a small patio. Maybe when its warmer! This is the first time I ever actually considered stealing a pillow from a hotel. I can only imagine how much better the place will be when the construction is done. Even our Concierge got us a taxi for our return home on the train. Not bad for less than $100 dollars a night.

Room Tip: Room is small but you spend more time touring Chicago than worrying about room size. No hotel break...

This hotel has a great location, right across from the park and museums. The rooms are ok and well cleaned. The bathroom was small, but recently renovated. This hotel is definitely not a three star hotel. The pool was smaller than it appears in the photos, was not inviting and the pool area did not appear to be well maintained.

At 1:30 in the morning there was a water leak/break in the wall. It only cause a few drops in our room so it wasn't a big deal. However, I think it speaks to the systems maintenance of the property.

Overall, I would stay there again for the right price.

Room Tip: Request a room with a view of the park!

Chicago was so friendly, the hotel is just out a bit from town and it is basic but very clean and comfortable. The local transport buses are excellent for 2.20$ you go anywhere. It has a pool, exercise room and sun lounging area so you can chill when you have enough of city sight seeing. It is opposite the beautiful milenium park. The bar and restaurant are very pleasant. You can even print off your flight boarding passes free of charge. We had a really good time and Legends the famous blues club just around the corner was an excellent night out
