Chicago's Essex Inn
Ranked #140 of 191 Hotels in Chicago
Reviewed November 24, 2012

We decided to stay a couple more nights in Chicago after the conference was over so we booked a suite at the Essex Inn.

The service was top notch as the service staff was very courteous and prompt. The room was comfortable but the noise level was a bit higher than expected as we had a north facing room on a lower floor. However, it wasn't that big of an issue as we were still able to sleep without very much disturbance.

The location is great because it's on Michigan Ave, it's right in front of Grant Park and for anyone that is taking the Chicago Hop on Hop Off Trolley/Double Decker bus tour, there is a location just next door at the Chicago Hilton!

They also offer shuttle service to some of the museums as well in the morning!

The restaurant at the Essex Inn was pretty good as well as I had a chance to have their breakfast. The service was great, and the food was worth the price.

Definitely staying here again if we come back to Chicago!

A GREAT VALUE. Lots of amenities: an indoor pool; good coffee in the room;a workout facilitiy;free bus to the museums, navy pier, downtown shopping. And a great bistro right in the lobby serving fresh, appetizing breakfast lunch and dinner. Overlooking Grant Park and right on Michigan Avenue this gem is a great find in the Windy City and the perfect launching post for a great vacatilon. Staff is always helpful from the desk to the Bellman to the housekeeping staff, even the lifeguard.

Room Tip: Higher floors have less street traffic noise...And i suspect the rooms on the south side are quieter...

This was my first time staying at the Essex Inn and will not be the last! The location is perfect. Close to the museum campus and restaurants. The front desk attendants, as well as the bellmen were very helpful and cordial. Great service. The room was a nice size. bed and pillows were quite comfortable. Bathroom was clean and nice size. Really liked the floor to ceiling windows, I was on the 12th floor and had a good view of the Willis Tower to one side and the museums and lake to the other. The have a french restaurant on site, but I didn't try it. I had breakfast at Yolk, which is just 2.5 blocks away. Because the "L" is soooo close to the hotel, you will experience the noise. But is not so bad. I will recommend this hotel to friends and family. And I will definitely stay here again.!

Good value for money when compared to the other -more expensive and often more dated- hotels on Michigan Ave. Great location across Grant Park and close to the major landmarks of Chicago. The bar downstairs serves good breakfast, and staff were very friendly, both in the bar and in the hotel.
The bathroom could have been cleaner, but it wasn't dirty. The room itself was spacious and very clean!

I booked a last minute deal here. Fantastic area near public txpt, lots of museums shopping and restaurants nearby. The room is large and clean. Basic accommodations overall, but a bang for the buck. If you're looking for a boutique this place is not for you.

Participated in a business trip with collegues and the Hilton next door was sold out. I decided to google earth and uncovered the Essex Inn was next door. I was pleasantly pleased with the location, rooms and restaurant at the hotel. The rooms were large for Chicago standards, updated with nice baths and exceptionally clean. The hotel staff was efficient and the room price was reasonable.
I loved the French restaurant especially for a quick breakfast. Definately would book this hotel again.

Staff are nice, Rooms are small, bathroom very small. Free wireless in only 56k, if you want high speed you have to pay. Coke machice is $2 for a CAN of coke, parking 46 dollars a day. Lobby very small and cold, Heating / Cooling system - there is a sign at front desk that tells you if the heat is on or the Air, never both. My room had the following issues - outlet plug cover missing, Cold water knob fell off in shower and tub drain backup.
Pool is nice, free shuttle downtown, location not bad. No room service.
Recommend you stay at the Hilton across the street. much never building for about same price.
