“Amazing Location and wonderful staff.”
Reviewed March 31, 2012

The Essex Inn was a GREAT place to stay. My whole family enjoyed it! The staff was very kind and always offered to show us plays to eat or tour. They were very helpful too! The housekeepers were a bit off though, missing small things like changing the empty toilet paper, and stuff like that, but over all they were nice.
The location worked VERY well, especially for sightseers like my family. It was close to the water and some rooms had beautiful views. Also it was very close to lots of the museums like the Art Institute, Field Museum, and Shedd Aquarium. Also the hotel offered a free shuttle bus at scheduled times to different locations. There were also some great restaurants and cafes nearby!!!
The rooms were very cozy too. The bathroom was on the small side, but it worked wonderfully! Also I thought the beds were very comfortable, but thats a matter of opinion I guess. Most of the rooms had great views too of the water and Grant Park.
The pool was very nice too. It was a beautiful place, and even had a life guard which is great for people with smaller children. The sauna wasn't always very hot but it was most of the time. There was also a gorgeous roof top garden!
A restaurant in the lobby opened while we were there and the food was fantastic and priced reasonably! It was great to just go down the elevator to breakfast and such!
I highly recommend this hotel to anybody. Its perfect for people with a low budget (they offer very good low priced rooms, and offer suites for higher prices) and for people with children. It also would be great for business trips and such. I will for surely be back here when my family returns to chicago. Thank you Essex!!

Room Tip: *Rooms facing the water have a better view... of course:) *Families should shoot for the cheaper pr...

I go to Chicago once a year on business. The Essex is perfect for my needs including a good price. It is centrally located and very convenient to the location of the convention I attend. It is clean and quiet and nicely appointed. The staff is friendly and helpful. I am very happy for that at six in the morning after taking the red-eye. There is no restaurant in the hotel but there are plenty of convenient and reasonably priced establishments very close. I would stay here if I came for fun; they have a beautiful new pool and very close to many tourist destinations I have visited.

Not expensive, 2-3 blocks max to the public transportation, good view on park and on Willis Tower, unfortunately without breakfast (but with a lot of indications where to go).

Best view from northern and eastern rooms, but not too much privacy because of the Hilton on the other side of the street.

Definitely recommended.

This hotel is in a good location close to the lake and parks. Also easy to get to the Red and Orange line. The rooms are comfortable but the cooling and heating system is not regulated by the guest. It is one unit and the hotel decides if AC should be on. I checked in at 2:30pm and the room was 76 degrees. It was like that most days out of my 10 day stay. At night with the window open (and all the street noise coming in) the room would get down to 72 maybe.

Room Tip: Hotels in North river area. The Homewood Suites is a great place to stay. It has lots of perks and f...

Having read some of the reviews on here, I didn't have hugh expectations, however the hotel was comfortable, clean and in a good location which is all we really wanted given that we weren't expecting to spend much time there. I think it is a good base from which to explore Chicago - we could walk most places easily and although a fair distance from the Magnificent Mile we did walk there from the hotel. We also walked to the Field Museum area and the view of the skyline from the museum area is fantastic(I would recommend).

Our room and bathroom weren't huge but were perfectly manageable and most importantly clean. The bed was large and very comfortable. Our only slight problem was the noise from the fridge which did keep us awake (although jet lag probably didn't help either) but we got used to it after the first night. Having said that, it was still useful to have a fridge in the room so we could store drinks.

We were fortunate to have a view of Grant Park from the room which was great.

The staff in the hotel were friendly and efficient. I would stay here again.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front of the hotel have better views.

The location is convenient overall. Granted, it's not in the Mag Mile area, but I actually think that is a plus rather than a negative. We did not use the hotel shuttle, as we found the Chicago transit system to be quite handy. The nearest L station (Roosevelt) is a little bit of a walk, but there is a bus stop right in front of the hotel, and it takes you to the streets where you can catch the train. I strongly suggest buying a transit pass to be able to hop on and hop of the trains and buses. The Museum Campus is not really within easy walking distance, but it's a very easy bus ride. The hotel shuttle did not really fit our schedule, but no complaints, because Chicago public transit is great. The hotel staff was helpful. Given that the hotel does not currently have dining, we were especially grateful about the detailed directions concerning the options that were within walking distance. Our one and only issue that was not quite perfect was that, the first day we were there, the heat was on even though it was a rather warm day, but I think that was just a function of how unseasonably warm things were. It's an older property, and the heating and cooling system is probably not as sophisticated as a fancy new place, but we still did okay, and we did need the heat when things cooled down some. So much of the discussion of Chicago tourism focuses on the Mag Mile, but honestly, I think that the Loop and South Loop have plenty going for them, and somehow, it does not seem quite as cookie-cutter touristy as the things further north on Michigan Ave. seem to be. This place is perfectly fine for folks who are used to mid-level accomodations. Don't expect to be pampered, but they were helpful.
