Inn of Chicago
Ranked #146 of 192 Hotels in Chicago
Reviewed December 7, 2011

Stayed here for my cousin's wedding in June 2010- the whole guest list stayed in the hotel, which was awesome!.
The location is unbeatable! In a side street right off the Magnificent mile, which is what Chicago is all about. So close to shops, restaurants, Millenium Park, you can walk to the beach and you can even walk to the Pier! that is quite far but I did it in midsummer, was beautiful! The only thing that was far was the metro, but I think there was a closer one that was under consrtuction.
it was great to be in the bustle of the city, but by being in a side street made it a little quieter just outside the hotel, which was good, because those streets can be packed with people so you lose each other quickly.
It is purely a hotel - a room ( very spacious, with 2 double beds, cupboard space, a TV etc) and quite a small bathroom for American standards, but well equiped with shampoo, towels etc. and a shelf to put your toiletry bag on- useful! there was a coffee maker in the room, but I am a tea drinker - no luck there.
No complaints about the rooms, clean and comfortable. We were super high up so our view wasnt too bad, but it was just other buildings, as its in the city centre.
there is a gym and a balcony - very pretty but it was mighty windy up there when I went up.
Aircon very effective - a must in hot summer!
There isnt a restaurant or any food provided, but lots of restaurants and cafes around, and the DUnkin DOnut across the street was a popular breakfast venue.
Taxi fare from central station wasnt bad- we came in on the train.
Would stay there again for the location.
Just be prepare d - its a huge hotel, lots of people, but I think only 3 lifts, so dont run out at the last minute, you may have to wait for a lift, sometimes i just used the stairs.

Room Tip: Get a room higher up, you feel less boxed in by buildings if you are not used to the city

This hotel was 1 block away from N. Michigan Avenue, which has very nice shops and coffee shops. It's also located walking distance from Navy Pier and Millennium Park.

Our room was clean. The bed too small. The bathroom was TINY, but functional.

We checked in the weekend after Thanksgiving. There was a big convention taking place in Chicago, called the "RSNA". There were people from all over the world staying at the hotel.

The first thing I noticed when I walked in the room, was a very strong and nasty smell of cigarette smoke. Yughhh!!! I called front desk and a housekeeping person showed up immediately and sprayed the entire room and bathroom. However, when the scent of the spray wore off, the cigarette smell came back just as strong. I covered the vents in the bathroom with a towel, and still I was getting the smell. It was so bad, I couldn't sleep that night.

The next morning, I personally went to the front desk and complained. The gentleman at the front desk was very honest, apologized, and told me there was nothing that could be done, other than to call security, to possibly find out who the smoker was.
I was later told that the hotel is non-smoking, however, some guests decide to take liberties and break rules, thus ruining other people's stay.

It's sad that because of these unruly people, I must give an average review of the hotel. I review hotels based on if I had a comfortable experience or not. In this case it's a negative :-(
However, I must acknowledge that it was not the hotel's fault.

We had issues with the internet in the room. This was a major issue!!!!
The wifi in the lobby did work and was free, but it's nice to be doing work in your room, instead of in a busy lobby, or having to walk all the way to a starbucks.

The room had a flat screen TV, but I couldn't work it out to watch regular programming.
The room amenities included very good tasting coffee, shampoo, conditioner, soap bars, but no shower caps, so bring your own.

Dear sobearies,
We have a zero tolerance policy on smoking in the hotel and guests are only allowed to smoke outside the premise. A previous guest may have attempted to use tobacco products in the guest room without the hotels consent, and for that they will be fined accordingly. Our apologies for the problems you experienced with the internet connection in your guest room and for any inconveniences it caused. Nevertheless, if you would like to speak with the Managing Director to find a resolution to your experience, please do not hesitate to contact Birgit Radin at (312) 787-3100.

Even though we stayed just one night, I wanted to compliment this hotel and its great staff. The location is great, just a half block east of Michigan Avenue. Arriving at rush hour on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, there were A LOT of people on the streets. Alan greeted us warmly and even conveyed a bit of humor, as I told him it was crazy outside, he said "I assure you, we are very sane in here." He was friendly, and even took a moment to find out about us, which you don't necessarily find these days. He upgraded our prepaid Queen bed room to a King corner suite on the 17th floor, which he did at no charge, since the hotel was not full, and it was around a holiday. It seems there is a lot of variability in room sizes, but we found the King corner room to be VERY spacious, and overall one of the nicer rooms we have stayed at in quite some time. The heating/cooling unit had some difficulty maintaining a set temperature (e.g. you set it for 68 and suddenly it is 75 degrees in the room), but the room never felt too hot or too cold. The bathroom is somewhat small, which many people seem to gripe about, but it is more than adequate for what a bathroom is--a tub/shower, toilet, and sink! I found it cute, and it was definitely clean and updated. There are 3 elevators that are smaller, 4 person elevators, but it didn't seem to be an issue in terms of access, except for certain times of the day (e.g. mid-morning and checkout time). There is a great Lavazza coffee shop that is connected to the hotel and opens at 6:00 a.m., and they serve breakfast and lunch sandwiches, among other things. The most striking thing about our stay was when we were leaving--the housekeeper thanked us for staying there, and that is something I have NEVER experienced at a hotel before! Compliments to all the wonderful staff!

Room Tip: Upper floor rooms (e.g. above the 10th floor) offer less street noise. Try to get a corner room and...

We stayed at the Inn of Chicago over the Lites Festival weekend and wanted to comment on our stay.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay.   Location was important and this hotel had a good one.   We were able to get a fairly competitive rate for our room only days before the festival.   Although we had some issues, as noted below, the positives were more important and allowed for a good visit.   As long as you understand what you are getting up front, we would recommend the hotel to others.

Cons:
The room was rather small.   It had a Queen sized bed which was just big enough to block the dresser drawers from opening.   This was not an issue as we only stayed 1 night.  But, if anyone wanted to use the dresser, they would be out of luck.
The window heater/AC ran but it had to be set to 85 degrees to get the room to an acceptable temperature.  I was glad that is was not very cold that night.
The elevators (3 of them) are rather small making it hard to fit more than 4 people on them (with no luggage).   And, on the morning of check-out, it was almost impossible to get an elevator as they were all in use.   We were glad to be on the 3rd floor and used the stairs.
The location was excellent.  It was on Ohio, just east of Michigan Ave.
The staff was friendly and very responsive.   I called to get a missing TV remote to have it delivered to our room in 5 minutes.   Check-in was fast and we were able to get into our room early- around noon.   Check-out was also fast.   We were able to check our luggage for later pickup and the valet chased down a cab for us.   They also have an elevator to the rooftop on the 22nd floor which affords excellent views of the city.
They did serve hot cider and cookies in the lobby after the parade.   This was a welcome treat after walking up and down Michigan Ave to see the sights.
There was a simulated fireplace in the lobby with comfortable couches/chairs for sitting.   There was also a bar at one end of the lobby.   They also had a small coffee shop at the other end.   And, if you needed different coffee or donuts, Dunkin Donuts was right across the street- as was Baskin and Robbins.
Our room, though small, was clean, comfortable and quiet.   The bed was soft and blankets light but warm.   It did have a coffee maker but we did not use it.   There was a desk and chair in the room.
Overall a good experience as long as you are willing to accept the few negatives.:)

Room Tip: To avoid having to use elevators ask for a room on a lower floor.

Dear DonnaW,
Thank you very much for your feedback. All comments both negative and positive allow us to learn from our guests experiences and improve as a team. Thank you for bringing your HVAC concerns to our attention and we will be sure to address this immediately with our Chief Engineer. We apologize for the elevator delays you experienced, but during check-in and check-out times our elevator does tend to get busier and slow down. Glad to hear that you were treated to some hot cider and cookies after the Light's Festival Parade. Nice perk to end the day! We thank you for choosing the Inn of Chicago and look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Stayed here for our second trip to Chicago (I had been to the city as a child). The rooms are small but have a lot of character. If you are looking for a new, swanky hotel do not stay here. We liked the more cozy feel. Also, great location. Rooms were VERY clean and front desk staff were accomodating.

When my wife and I arrived at the hotel we asked for an early check in and got it straight off, but we were hoping for a better view than we ended up with. I came back down to the front desk and politely asked Veroncia if she could help us as we had never been to this beautiful city before and she did. She allowed us to switch rooms to one that was better for first time visitors to Chicago. When it was time to check out, Bob arranged to hold our luggage for a while for free and a flat fee cab to the airport with Jesse the cab driver. A hotel is in the business of accomodating. With the right staff they did. We will come back for a longer stay this summer with our kids in tow. Great central location. It was a reasonalbe cab fare to the aquarium.
