“Great atmosphere and eclectic menu”

One of my favorite places in Chicago to dine whenever I am in town. Great micro brews, food is outstanding, something different from usual fare. Popular with the locals, always crowded but they seat you quickly and are very accommodating. Cant miss with this restaurant!

“Solid for a variety of reasons, but not favorite”
Reviewed April 10, 2013

The Gage is located right across the famed Millenium park and Art Institute of Chicago on the Magnificent Mile, Michigan Avenue. The location is very good for visitors looking for elegant fare close to attractions. Atmosphere is lively, especially the afterwork bar scene, filled with local professional or business dinner types. The noise level however is rather high, making a quiet date or getting-to-know you conversations a bit exhausting. Service is good and attentive. Food is average--hit or miss, some dishes very well prepared, some dishes not; some dishes seem too costly for what it is; palate on the "too well seasoned" side, needing to grab that glass of water very frequently. Overall: great location, energetic atmosphere, average (meh) food. Downtown restaurants in Chicago tend toward the trend of "little substance, all flare" so if you are looking for a tasty meal, recommend venturing away from the visitor-centric areas. If you are more concerned about "being in the moment" rather than the food itself, then I think this place is quite satisfactory. Happy eating!

“A surprising find!”
Reviewed April 9, 2013

A casual, lively, pub like feel with elegant fine dining. A very nice selection of fresh wild game as well as other options, my husband and sons had a hard time deciding on what to order. With the help of the knowledgable staff we were able to try many different dishes such as rabbit, venison, elk and duck. All were delicious! Wine list is also new with many "budget minded" options.

“Great brunch/lunch spot!”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

We stopped at The Gage before heading to the Art Institute across the street. We didn't have reservations, and at 1:00 on a Saturday we did have to wait a bit (20 minutes) until a table opened up. They have a great menu and we had the fish and chips and the venison burger. The fish was your basic whitefish/cod but the Guinness batter was not too heavy or doughy so it was good. Presentation was nice, the chips (fries) were good but nothing special. My husband can't stop talking about how much he loved the venison burger. It comes with a great BBQ sauce that is perfectly balanced. Because it's a wild game meat with very little fat, it's really important to order it medium rare at the most (my husband had it rare) or it would be too dry.
