“Small portions”
Reviewed June 25, 2012

I and my wife decided to give it a try for this noodle store, and was amazed to find a huge menu with variety of Chinese food and rich Japanese sushi. We decided on two soup noodles as a start, after all, that's what they advertised for, with a chef pulling the ramen at the window. We have enjoyed many different styles of pulled noodles in Taiwan, China, and many US cities, and most are great. Those noodles are supposed to be very chewing, springy and firm, especially with wider ones.

We were first disappointed with the portion - it's very small. I estimated we need twice as much to stuff. The broth is tasty, however, not satisfactory. We both ordered different variety of beef noodle, and there is absolutely no beef flavor in the broth. It feels more like MSG or chicken broth to us. Finally, the ramen was tender, not like the pulled ramen we're expecting.

Since we are still hungry after the meal, we ordered a famous Szechuan dish, water-boiled fish. It is supposed to be hot and spicy food that goes well with rice. Again there is portion issue - only small layer of fish on top to cover the large amount of cheap veggies underneath. The taste is far from typical flavor of this dish - enough pricky taste but not spicy at all.

One other thing, when the check arrives, we noticed the water-boiled fish was charged a higher number. We called for waitress and were explained the menu was "old price" but she could correct it for us. That's VERY BAD. So watch your check before you pay.

Service is OK. The tea-red bean drink is great. Price is OK. But I guess we won't visit them again.

“Very good”
Reviewed June 22, 2012

Their menu is huge! I had the Calamari and my wife had the shortribs and both were very good. If we make it back to Chinatown in Chicago we will most certainly have lunch here again!

“Hand pulled ramen...yum.”
Reviewed November 23, 2011

Shanghai dumplings, salt and peeper squid and ramen...can't ask for much more at one place. The service was good, food yummy and watching the guy make the noodles was one of the coolest things we've seen in a long time. Well worth the ride from downtown.

“More show than substance... Entirely unimpressive”
Reviewed November 21, 2011

As a all noodle soup lover, I was eager to try the restaurant. The restaurant provides the only noodle making show in Chinatown. Although the chef is not very good [as you can compare with some phenomenal chef on YouTube], he is the only "show" in town. There is nothing like the taste of freshly made noodle. I love it so. Hing Kee's signature noodle is slippery, fresh and delicious. It definitely lived up to my expectation. As for the rest, I was in for a surprise. The portion is disappointingly small. The ingredient could have been fresher. However, the real disappointment came with the broth. The broth is what gives a noodle soup its flavor, thus its life. Hing Kee's broth was appallingly bland. It had no substance. It seems have been flavored only with little bit of table salt and coloring. It absolutely ruined the whole dish. If only they could improve on the broth, they may have a real winner.
