The Best Western Plus Hawthorne Terrace hotel is a newly renovated facility in Chicago's Lakeview district. Our room 421 was in the southeast corner with two king beds, a fully furnished kitchenette, restored hardwood floors and tile entryway and bathroom. The shower had a rainfall showerhead and double sinks with plenty of counterspace. The staff was friendly and efficient and very accommodating. Given that it was the end of January 2013 and a very mild winter (the first real snowfall occured the day before our arrival), there was easy access to public transit and local attractions.

We were attending a conference at Loyola, but couldn't find adequate accommodations nearby, so we sought out something between Loyola and downtown Chicago. It also gave us moderate access by the 'L' Red Line to my favorite pastry place, The Swedish Bakery!

My only complaint is that this facility and it seems every other newly renovated hotel we book have installed plantation shudders instead of drapes. They do not keep out light. Fortunately it was overcast almost every day and the bedroom we stayed in faced east. In addition the pillows were way too high to be comfortable (I didn't inquire about other pillows since I've started bringing my own.) If these are not issues for you, I highly recommend this facility.

Room Tip: Room 421 faces southeast with one "bedroom" on the east side and the other "bedroom" in the southeast corner. There never were any problems with noise from other guests. The elevator is on the other end of the floor. The ice machine is in the lobby of the ground floor. There is a convenient carpeted stairwell near the room.

"Boutique" is a French word, softly exotic to the American ear. Even reading it evokes images of warmth, charm, intimate rooms, cozy spaces, impeccable service, elegant dining, understated furnishings, lush outdoor patios, on a smaller tasteful scale. Dictionary.com tells us boutique is “a small, exclusive business offering customized service; a small business specializing in one aspect of a larger industry.” It puts us in mind of small specialty businesses offering intuitive service and quality products, right? Yet reviews often let us in on the “little” truth that it has become an overused and often misleading term.

I first glimpsed the attractive facade and front patio of Hawthorne Terrace seven years ago when my son moved to the Wrigleyville neighborhood of Chicago and I have wanted to stay here ever since. This being January, their rates finally fell within my budget and I seized my opportunity to see it from the inside out.

The lobby, middle hallway and front desk fit the small charming image well. My room is delightfully cozy at the hall’s end with butter brown walls, a warm textured accent wall, classic off-white trim, snug fitting plantation shutters covering two large windows, traditional earthy green patterned carpeting, a rich golden duvet with copper bed skirt and a surprisingly spacious bathroom with a ceramic floor, slate bath surround, patterned swirls in the stylish wallpaper and a huge, well lit mirror and vanity. Behind heavy mirrored French doors is a large closet that also holds the miniature refrigerator, microwave and Keurig coffee maker. The ample desk, queen headboard and three-drawer chest are dark wood with a black swivel chair and a neutral side chair. Very satisfying.

Their continental breakfast is serviceable with instant hot and cold cereals, bottled juices, pre-packaged commercial quality muffins, bagels, rolls or bread, yogurt and fruit cups, regular and decaf coffee and a hot serving dish holding flat preformed discs of eggs and sausage patties. A basket holds two bunches of bright green bananas and a collection of green and red apples.

And here’s the thing: Not one person on the front desk staff has been friendly or welcoming. Their shared body language, eye contact, voice quality, verbal responses, lack of greeting and unsatisfactory knowledge of the area have been conveyed without interest – bordering on sarcasm from one young man. Thankfully, their housekeeping staff has smiled and greeted me warmly when I greet them first.

It is the people who make or break an endeavor, no matter the business. I would stay here again strictly for the convenience and the environment – not for the ambiance or service. And I would caution anyone wanting gracious genuine service to look elsewhere. Unless the management chooses to remedy this with their staff, you won’t find it here.

Room Tip: Courtyard rooms are quieter, especially corner rooms. Ask for the 4th floor. A/C units are noisy but alternate off & on if you choose "auto."

I often stay in Chicago and selected this Best Western upon a recommendation. It was quiet, comfortable, beautifully decorated and reasonably priced. Best Western, I was impressed. Sorry Marriott and CP

Entire hotel has a pungent odor or cigarettes regardless of whether or not you are even near a smoking room or not. Fumes from cleaning supplies try to cover it up but only make the situation worse. The bed sheets were not fully pulled over the mattess mainly because they did not fit. Ice machines on all floors except the lobby floor were broken. When asking the front desk for for an extra towel they told us to go find the housekeeper and ask her. Nothing about this hotel was impressive except for its location in boystown. Unless you are really strapped for cash, find another boutique hotel instead of this place.
