Owner description: The pioneers of kayaking on the Chicago River, Wateriders has been hosting kayak tours for 20 years. Guests get an unbeatable view of the city's beautiful interior skyline as they paddle through the architectural canyon that is downtown Chicago. Located on the riverwalk behind the East Bank Club in the River North neighborhood, Wateriders is ideally situated for making the most out of one's adventure and is easily accessible by all means of transportation. Both guided tours and open rentals are available.

After years in Chicago I finally rented a kayak (half price promotion via internet). The location is convenient (bus #66 on Chicago Avenue to Larabee Ave., then north a block and then through the building down to the riverfront marina). Staff is very helpful, equipment is good, and views are beyond awesome.

This is a great way to see downtown Chicago if you also like being on the water. The guys at Wateriders are fantastic -- from making sure I had a boat that was comfortable for me, to making the 2 1/2-ish hour trip fun and interesting with a mix of history and humor. You'll paddle from the old Montgomery Ward headquarters and warehouse to the Michigan Av bridge and back, with a few stops along the way. We had about 20 boats on this tour, with paddlers of varying amounts of experience. The guides seem used to working with people who don't kayak much (or at all), and did a great job keeping us all safe. I'd do this again, and if you like kayaking and like Chicago -- so should you!

This was a lot of fun, with a lot of cool knowledge thrown in. The architectural tour of Chicago by Kayak gave a unique perspective. Wateriders has been doing this the longest on the Chicago RIver, and the experience showed. Their operation was efficient and the guides knowledge (Joel) extensive.

The Chicago skyline is impressive from many angles, but none more so than water level. Wateriders [--] offers a 3-hour guided tour on the Chicago river. We were fortunate to have a cloudless, windless day in early June. Wateriders took 11 patrons (2 guides) for an easy, no-experience-required four-mile paddle along this improving waterway. Our lead guide told stories of gangsters, ghosts, and recited rosters of noted designers, history, and poetry with aplomb. Don't expect a quiet, pristine riverway or abundant wildlife. From kayak-level, you're near all the detritus deposited waterward from a city-scale consumables market. And, the scale tilts to odor rather than fragrance on the olfactory continuum. But that's not a knock on this outfitter, and it was ecologically encouraging to come across four other large groups of paddlers from other outfitters during our tour. This is a cool, brief diversion for resident and tourist alike. Check the forecast, make the reservation, and paddle-on!
