This is one of the most dependable places for sushi. It is consistently good. They have developed a steady reputation, and it's well deserved.

Thank Terence B

The sushi and service are amazing! Ask for the special and be delighted at all their unique combinations! May have a wait if you go on the weekends and not open for lunch.

Very low quality fish served in sparse quantity at exorbitant price in an unwelcome manner while sitting at the bar. Ugh [squared].

Tanoshii's chef-owner Mike Ham is a culinary artist, who asks his clients about their likes and dislikes, and then creates sushi mini-masterpieces to their individual tastes. There is nothing run-of-the-mill about the food. It is top quality, starting with the ingredients, and maintained throughout the careful preparation. It also exhibits thoughtful, creative flair. Whenever it is time to leave Tanoshii, I know that I will want to return at the first opportunity.
Sitting at Mike's sushi bar, one tends to get into conversation with other patrons. It may come as a surprise, but it's definitely a huge compliment, to discover that several of Mike's regulars are themselves restaurant owners, and are more than happy to travel from downtown Chicago to enjoy his very special food.
Some pointers: -
BYOB wine, sake, beer or whatever ($1 cover charge). There's a Dominick's across the street; or, better yet, "In Fine Spirits", a small but nicely stocked wine shop just a few yards south and across Clark.
Sit at the bar if there's space for your party: you can watch Mike at work.
Tell Mike your likes and dislikes, and then let him create "Specials" for you. Of course, there is a menu: but a little mystery can be fun.
The "fish and chips" appetizer, (tuna, avocado, and fish roe on a fresh tortilla chip) makes a delicious starter. But there are many other choices, such as soft shell crab.
Mike's Special maki rolls run from about $16 - $22. Those prices may sound high, but the content is high on exquisite fish and low on rice.

This was our first experience with Sushi Mike and sitting at the bar was a great overall. Mike runs the show and creates tasty and unusual combinations custom for you. He also has GF menu which I really appreciated. I've never had Olive tepanade on a roll before and it was fabulous. Everything was fresh and bright, but I can't tell you what we had. Thus the reason for the 4 stars, rolls were a surprising $21, it takes a long time to get your order (but that's an artist for you), and he refuses to share with you what you are eating.
