“Great location, especially at this rate”
Reviewed May 18, 2007

I very much enjoyed the James Hotel, especially since I got a rate of $169 through TravelZoo for a Deluxe Queen room.
Check in was very quick and very professional. I had a room on the 16th floor, facing Ontario Street. I never, however, heard any street noise, or any noise, really. The room was very quiet. The room was very large, with room for a large chair and ottoman and a small table and bench/sofa, in addition to the queen size. bed.
The decor was white, white, with more white, which I wasn't totally crazy about, but it wasn't too distracting.
Free wi-fi everywhere in the hotel, and the room had an ipod docking station, or whatever those things are called... There was a very well stocked mini bar, as well as full bottles and a cocktail shaker for fixing more than one or two drinks.
The bed was very, very comfortable, the TV was great, and the clock in the room was one of the kind that projects the time on the ceiling.
Turn down service provided a cookie and placed the robe and slippers on the bed.
There is a steakhouse in the hotel that serves breakfast and lunch as well as dinner. I didn't have the opportunity to dine there, but it was always very crowded. Check elsewhere for reviews.
The location is two blocks west of Michigan Avenue and all its shopping. A few blocks farther east is Lake Michigan; great for a walk during warmer months (not so much in the middle of winter). The famous Pizzeria Due is down the street, and Trader Joe's is across the street if you want to pick up some things to have in the room to munch on.
All in all, a great stay! I would definitely return, and highly recommend it to all.

My husband and I took a trip to Chicago to explore the city and for the amazing food! Stayed from May 4-7.

We got an amazing deal for our room at hotwire.com. Which is a travel website where they show you the price, stars, and general location of the hotel in the city you wish to say. They don't tell you which hotel you are getting for the price though. And once booked, cannot be canceled. It was much cheaper than any other online travel site so we decided to take our chances and purchased the hotel deal. After we purchased the hotel deal, we were shown which hotel we were getting. And The James it was!!!! We were very excited since it was about a 60% savings compared to booking anywhere else.

Check-in-Very easy check in process and polite employees.

Room-We were on the 16th floor with a view of Rush St. It was a great view!!! We could hear some of the outside sounds of the city but it was not an issue for us. The decor is very neat, everything is new considering this is a new hotel in an old remodeled building. The rooms are a good size and has a flat screen tv and a little nook with a small cushion and table to eat at or work. Their is a small mini bar and fridge filled with costly drinks, alcohol and snacks. Several informational books about Chicago to give you ideas of what to do while you are there. There were two bath robes provided and two pairs of red slippers in plastic packaging that you can keep. The beds were so comfortable and my husband raved about how good of a nights sleep he had each night.

Bathroom-Decent sized with a wardrobe and full length mirror. Door is a funky sliding door, however when we 1st got in our room it was off it's tracks. But husband put it back on the tracks. Lovely grey tile in shower and floors and bowl style sink. Well stocked with several towels. Kiehl's brand toilletries was a nice surprise. I love Kiehls! Hair dryer and ironing supplies in room.

Location-Perfect location which was walking distance to the bars and clubs on Rush st., a movie theater, shopping on mag mile and great places to eat such as Pizzeria Duo, Giordano's & Portillo's for Chicago stlye hot dogs. We took taxi's to Navy Pier, Shedd Aquarium and The Field Musuem.

Internet-2 computers available in lobby which you can check your email and even use the printer which we used to print our boarding passes for our flight back home. For a fee, you can acccess internet in your room using the flat screen tv. But the computers in the lobby are free.

Hotel also has a fitness room and massage spa which we did not use.

Overall, we had a pleasant stay and love The James.

I got a great rate through Travel Zoo after seeing tons of good press on this place. It's a little pretentious, but interesting. The more I think about it, the more I like it. They upgraded us to a suite since it was a birthday trip and even had special treats in the room for us. When I wrote afterwards to thank them and ask for the recipe, they emailed the recipe and then mailed a big box of goodies to my home. LOVELY customer service. Only problem is that one elevator was down and the wait time was long, but not a crisis. The location is terrific for MagMile shopping and eating and Trader Joe's is right across the street to grab some fresh things to munch on. We generally stay at the Conrad and it has more of a gracious vibe to it, but this was fun for a change. It seemed the folks sitting in the lobby were all young and beautiful and very hip, but the rooms were fun; check out the mini-bar, it's a hoot.

  • Liked — Fun and hip
  • Disliked — The couch and chairs were not comfy, but the bed was great!
