Wonderful hotel, in a great location, just off Michigan. Small, intimate, warm and inviting. You can walk everywhere from this location. There is no other place we would stay in Chicago except The James.

Second time I've stayed at the James - best hotel I've stayed at in Chicago! Very helpful staff. They are also knowledgable and recommend amazing restaurants and jazz clubs. Perfect location. EJ is the man!

We really enjoyed our stay at the James! It is new, fresh and has a very friendly and helpful staff! It is great located just steps from everything Chicago can offer. We will be back next time we are in Chicago. We loved the wi-fi in the room and the bathroom. Everything was clean and nice, and modern. US hotels has a tendency to take us back to the 70ties or 80ties and we do not like it very much.

Good hotel.. all the staff very friendly and helpful.. The rooms were very clean and the beds were extremely comfortable which is what you need after a 17 hours of air flights.. the only downer was traffic noise.. sirens etc which you could expect being so central to the city..

Room Tip: try and get a room away from the front of the hotel

I truly appreciate your compliments of our wonderful team and glad that they assisted in making your visit an enjoyable one. A nice location, nice staff, but the room is terrible. A tiny bathroom with a pocket door that was very difficult to move. The thing called a closet is a tiny hole in the wall with a rag hanging in front of it. Since there is no light anywhere nearby, it is very difficult to get anything in or out. There is no drawer space for anything. What could be a dresser is taken up with overpriced liquor for sale. There are no night stand lamps, just an overhead light, and there is no light switch on one side of the bed. A miserable experience. One day the door to the room could not be opened because the battery for the lock died. The front desk did not want to believe it, and made us try it again before they called maintenance. About an hour after our complaint, we finally got into the room. I guess they forgot to apologize or make up for the inconvenience.

Dear travelingman47,

I would like to take this opportunity to apologize for the inconveniences you had while with us. The conditions and issues that you described certainly do not meet our expectations, and I am very sorry that this occurred. We pride ourselves on providing exceptional customer service, and the response to the key problem you encountered certainly does not reflect that. I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss this with you further offline and you can contact me directly at jameschicagoGM@jameshotels.com. Thank you for bringing this to my attention and I look forward to speaking with you soon!

We stayed 5 nights with two children @ start of July.

Overall we were happy with the hotel. The location is great; one block away from Michigan Ave and the Magnificent Mile; easy access to CTA bus and subway lines and within walking distance of the tourist attractions like Navy Pier and Millennium Park.

Our stay started off a little bumpy:
1 - toilet got clogged upon our first use
2 - later that same night, the shades to the windows completely became unravelled.
Both incidents were promptly resolved with two calls to maintenance. My wife who stays at Trump Towers when travelling for business was not left with a good first impression. However the rest of the stay didn't require any more maintenance calls :)

Pros:
- location; Trader Joe/Starbucks across the street, Eataly around the block and other restaurants within a block or two; department stores (Nordstrom, Bloomingdales) within a few blocks
- good size gym with well appointed equipment
- friendly staff; welcoming door staff
- comfortable bedding, towels and robes
- clean
- nice boutique styled rooms
- kids were provided with a welcome package

Cons:
- rather expensive room service
- no pool (kids complained about that)
- poor television signal; no digital or HD signal
- outdoor noise audible

Regarding the negative aspects; I'll go into a bit more detail. One night I ordered room service for the kids as they didn't want to go out for dinner. We ordered a kids pasta plate and burger slider plate. I was aware of the price as I ordered but I figured David Burke's is rated as one of the finer restaurants so the price might reflect the quality of the food. The room service was prompt but I was disappointed in the quality of the meal. The pasta was overcooked and average. The girls seemed to enjoy the sliders a bit more but even that they didn't finish. For what they were presented I found the price to be rather expensive for a couple of kids meals (42$). Maybe comparing room service to restaurant dining shouldn't be made; but the hotel touts the same menu for room service. Because the quality/price ratio was disappointing, my wife and I decided to forego our plans to eat at David Burke's; opting to try other eateries in the vicinity.

Regarding the poor television signal. None of the feeds were HD let alone digital. It seemed to be a standard cable feed. Perhaps this could have been resolved by the staff but we didn't bother complaining as we weren't in Chicago to watch television.

Re: outdoor noise, I found on a couple of nights I was disturbed by sirens from emergency response during the night. Not a big deal for me or the family but if there are light sleepers, it's something to consider or one might want to request a room in a different location. We were in room 817.

I would have given the place a 5 star rating if not for the early hiccups and the little negatives that I've just noted. But the James Chicago is still a very decent hotel.
