A sightseeing cruise was on our itinerary but we were undecided as to whether or not to do the lake cruise or river cruise. As we had already done much of the riverwalk on foot we opted for the lake cruise to see the city from a different perspective.

Cruises depart from Navy Pier at regular intervals and you can purchase tickets at their ticket kiosk or online. Including tax our tickets cost $25 per person.

The cruise had commentary on board throughout the duration of the trip. There is seating on the upper and lower decks. Our vessel didn’t have enclosed windows on the lower deck and as it was a windy day we found it difficult to find shelter.

Once out on the lake you do a loop passing by the infamous Chicago skyline and the lighthouse giving you plenty of time to capture the perfect photos.

Total cruise time is 40 minutes.

Shoreline sightseeing was well worth the money.

We took a late afternoon architecture tour and loved it. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and engaging. The views were great. I would take this tour again. Great for families.

Pro: It’s Chicago architecture. There’s so much history. Best way is by a cruise like this with live narrative along the way. We arrived early and were even allowed to participate in an earlier cruise. They did provide ponchos to accommodate the rainy, cold conditions.

Con: Know that there are open cruises where you are literally sitting on wooden benches exposed to the elements. And there are enclosed vessels that protect you from the elements. It depends upon which location you depart from.

We departed from Navy pier. That is an open vessel.

On the website this is not very clear. As it was raining and very, very cold the day we went, we were quite surprised to learn that we would be sitting in an open vessel.

Overall it’s a very worthwhile cruise. I highly recommend it. The four star rating is based upon the ambiguity of the website not indicating the vessels for each location.

Would visit again and prepare for voyage based upon the location of our departure.

This was one of the highlights of our Chicago trip. Our guide Nick was outstanding with his knowledge of local Chicago architecture and history- make sure you book your tour with him! One small thing was we found the drinks kind of pricey on board but overall a fantastic experience
