“Go by and look - don't go in”

The burgers were cheap but there was like 1/8 inch patty on a big bun. There was nothing special about this. It's a tourist trap.

“Don't take your date here”
Reviewed January 24, 2013 via mobile

My wife and I went here to see it at night and just have fun out. It wasn't. I will be fair and say it may be good if you came for lunch. The prices are great but we can't speak for the food bc we didn't order any.

Night out, nope. An interesting lunch, possibly.

“A Touristy Gimmick”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

John Belushi's SNL piece was an actual reenactment not a spoof on how orders are taken and food is served at this eatery. More 50s dinner than 30s tavern the food is the last reason a person would visit. However, the bar and the bartender were very nice. They poor up a Billy Goat brew. The default order is a double "chi-borger." There is a reason for that is the patty in a single is barely detectable. Paper thin and flavorless the sandwich is just a ruse to get people in. Maybe if you really worked on it it could be palatable. BTW, the sandwich is served the way they damn well please. Your pleas for alterations go nu-heeded. But, by all means, go there, it is a Chicago institution! But now you know what to expect.

“Famed burger joint/greasy spoon”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

A landmark that holds much history: inspired the famous CheeseburgerCheeseburger Saturday Night Live skit, source of the Cubs World Series curse and gathering spot of Chicago's journalists. The employees keep up the schtick from SNL ("no fries, chips" "Cheeseburger!") and there's all kinds of Chicago newspaper clippings/memorabilia on the walls. Don't go here if you're expecting great Chicago food, go here for the experience and atmosphere. You'll be rubbing elbows with strangers and you'll end up just relaxing in the madness. Great time, not great food. Also if you're not into greasy burgers and all that, just go and grab some drinks and watch the show.

“Dank and Historic = Perfect”
Reviewed January 21, 2013

If you're into baseball history or old-school SNL, then you should make a point to stop by here. We happened to stumble upon it, went down the slightly scary stairs to the below-street-level street and went in for a beer.
