To find this place: get the address, when you think you should find it, look for stairs in the middle of the sidewalk that go to the street below. There will be an easy-to-miss plaque to direct you there. We are SNL fans, so we stopped in for a drink. I hear the burgers are good, but we didn't eat. The place was a bit grungier than I expected, even knowing it is a dive bar.

It's a burger on a Kaiser roll and not much more. It tastes great if that's what you are looking for but there are not many frills or choices.

The BGT is nothing to look at when you first walk in. To be honest is looks like any cheap burger joint and bar, but if you're like me and like some character and history in places, then try this one out.

The bar was a famous haunt for Tribune journalists back in the day, and the bar is lined with photos of many of them, plus many other celebs. This bar was the basis for the classic SNL "Cheezeboiger" sketch with John Belushi, and indeed, there's a signed picture of Jake and Elwood (The Blues Brothers) on the wall.

The barman (Bobby) pours his drinks 'old style', so if he likes you watch out, you'll be staggering out.

Oh... and they do a good cheeseburger too! ;-)

Took my family here for breakfast. It has not changed in the last 7 years. It is not great food, but is good food and the atmosphere is authentic. Still has the pictures of all the greats up on the wall.

First of all, don't have expectations for a ritzy, high class burger joint. Billy Goat Tavern is an underground, down to earth, real talk, hole in the wall type burger joint. The staff consists of authentic Chicago locals, who serve cheap, thin, greasy cheese/hamburgers that taste quite delicious.

The place contains a lot of interesting history. The atmosphere gives an authentic Chicago experience in my opinion, so I am glad that my group decided to eat lunch here one day. I recommend at least giving Billy Goat Tavern a chance while in Chicago!
