I wanted to have some genuine Polish food while staying in Wicker Park, and in spite of the dingy storefront to the cafe, I decided to give Podhalanka a try. I was not disappointed. Since I had no idea what to order, the owner (I presume) behind the counter made the choices for me. He started me with a delicious bowl of homemade soup and then brought me a plate of warm cheese blintzes that were heavenly. Lastly, he brought out a platter of assorted perogies, meat, potato, cheese and vegetable stuffed pockets. There was way more than I could eat, but it was all delicious.

Next door to the Chopin Theatre and the Polish Triangle, this is ethnic cuisine like your Polish grandmother made. In fact the restaurant looks unchanged from your grandmother's house complete with pink vinyl table cloth, mixed flatware, multiple pictures of the pope, and dust bunnies in the corners. The cabbage soup was so wonderful I hardly minded the toothpick cooked in it. And though the pierogi (cheese dumplings) were sweet and light the real stars were the potato pancakes made with grated potato and onion, fried very hot and crispy on the outside, moist on the inside. The stuffed cabbage was a cold disappointment. This is not a place to make a special trip but if you are in the neighborhood anyway, have some soup and pancakes.

Not a date place, not a business meeting place but... a solid, fun eatery that beats McDonalds any time, at approximately the same cost!

What a great find! Friends of ours had tried this restaurant a few weeks ago and recommended it to us, they were so right! The food is wonderful, the waitress was very sweet and friendly, the prices are so reasonable, the portions very generous! You won't be disappointed! We have been to Poland, this is the best Polish food we've found since coming back to the States!

Went for dinner on a Saturday night. A hole in the wall but the food was really, really good. Had a beet salad, potato/cheese pierogis, potato pancakes, and beef roll (with mashed potato) -- yes, alot of potato in one meal but really good. Pierogis were plump with filling and potato pancakes were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The beef roll was meaty and the filing was tasty. We regretted not trying the golobki or other Polish fare on the menu but that gives us a reason to go back.

Service was good -- I think it's one of the owners that greets you and this is a Mom & Pop operation. The decor is old-school Polish so anyone looking for a great decor should go elsewhere or keep their expectations really low. It's also very easy to get to via the Division St. station of the Blue subway line.

The food is what you come for and everything was fresh and homemade, and tastes like grandma used to make. What more could you want??
