Description: Gioco pioneered the retail development of the South Loop when it opened in September of 1999. The restaurant has been a mainstay in the neighborhood as other restaurants and stores have opened up over the years. Gioco is located in an historic building built in 1890 and is one of the few remaining buildings in Chicago from that era. The Gioco space features the original old brick and plaster walls, an old wooden walk-in cooler and a walk-in safe built into the wall, used by the Chicago gangsters (Al Capone, Frank Nitti, George "Bugs" Moran and Earl "Hymie" Weiss ) for one of the gambling and/or brothel houses that dominated the area in the early 1900s. Designer Jerry Kleiner designed Gioco restaurant to retain these old world elements and to feature them in his modernization of the space.

“Fun Italian Restaurant”
Reviewed January 12, 2013

Enjoyed a very good dinner at this attractive restaurant. We had drinks in an attractive small room said to have been a speakeasy during Prohibition and then ate in the large private dining room. Especially considering they were serving a number of us my fish and my spouse's steak were both perfectly cooked. First courses, soup or pasta were also very tasty.

It seemed like an otherwise slow night and the very attractive large dining room was not very crowded. I would say it is worth a visit ,and ask to see the speakeasy.

“Great Dinner”
Reviewed January 10, 2013 via mobile

While living in Chicago, this place was one of my favorites! Now That I dont call Chicago home anymore, it has been a couple of years since I had the chance to eat there. As always, it was delicious. The sliced steak and arugula was perfectly cooked and the tortellini was light, fresh and delicious. Service was great as well as the warm chocolate cake for dessert. Always a great meal.

“Lovely evening, great food, fun vibe”
Reviewed December 12, 2012 via mobile

We just had a great time at Gioco on our first night in Chicago this trip. Service was excellent and the food was divine. Started with the crab cake, lots of crab, very little cake, lovely sauce - we split it because we were saving a bit of room for desert. Our entrees were the salmon with green beans (perfectly cooked and seasoned) and the special pork chop. My husband loved the pork chop, his plate was soon clean. Then we had the apple tatin and vanilla bean creme brûlée - excellent and just the right sizes. We enjoyed the short walk to and from the Hilton on Michigan Ave. Thank you, Gionco, we will be back!

“Best Restaurant in Chicago”
Reviewed December 11, 2012

The best dining experience I've had in Chicago, period. The chef is incredibly invested in making your experience at Gioco a memorable one, regardless of who you are. It's romantic, the food is delicious, the prices reasonable, and the service efficient and friendly. I will be coming back many more times after this.
