“Lots of food, but noisy and, well, Average”
Reviewed June 30, 2014

I figured out a few years back that I having lived a total of 6 months in Italy over the past 4 decades and having grown up with Italian immigrant families I have eaten a lot of Italian food - home cooked and restaurant. The main thing Rose Angeli's (RA) had going for it was the portion size. I understand it is a local Chicago landmark, romantic and nostalgic for lots of people,a dn that is why I got taken there, but it's just not what I enjoy in "Italian". To me it was like a Chinese chop suey house equivalent. Enormous portions (not an empty plate in the dining room that I saw), sure, but nothing quite excellent about any of it. Wednesday's they have an amazing price special - $75 gets you a shared app, 3 soups or salads, 3 choices of any mains, shared dessert. I got to try the special of the day pizza - whole wheat cracker with too much going on - spinach, broccolli, parmesan, sun dried toms, red pepper concasse. Salad was dull caesar, pork chop was huge and dry as cardboard, Zuppe di frutti di mare had lots of seafood (more calamari than fish) but lacklustre broth, seafood pasta similar with the calamares, but dull marinara sauce, then this huge slab of "tiramisu" which was more like a layer cake drenched in booze in a cream sauce. Okay, so the food did not thrill me - however, staff were really friendly and served quickly though the kitchen was slow (6:30 - 9:00 for dinner for three), owner/chef Larry was very friendly, and there was enough food for 6 people. For a group of hungry (young) friends, maybe it works. For my money, though - I'd rather stay downtown and stick to Eataly or Via Del Stato.

“Best Italian in Chicago”
Reviewed May 29, 2014

I've been going to Rose Anglis for years and I've never been disappointed. It has the best Italian food in Chicago, and that's saying a lot in this city. The wait staff are always friendly and knowledgable. It's a great place for friends and family and also great for a romantic date. The small rooms and outdoor seating really give you a varaity of choices.

“It takes a House.”
Reviewed May 15, 2014

Step back in time when family run restaurants were in neighborhoods, the menu was original, and you were first brought there by a friend. Can't be in a rush though, everything is made to order. Just sit back, have a bottle of wine and enjoy the company & service. By the way, the desserts are as large as the meals.

“Great Find”
Reviewed April 22, 2014

Food was absolutely delicious. Parking was pretty impossible to find, and they do not offer any valet parking. We went on a Sunday and it was surprisingly very busy. It was a bit loud in the main area. The service was definitely slow. The waiter took two tables' orders near us before bringing us our first drink. However, the quality, ambiance, pleasant environment and hosting, and family-owned recipes really will make this a top spot! Just make sure that you have time to invest in the slower paced service.
