“Fun experience”

Ventured on the EL, had a stop just a few blocks from this funky place. The door is locked and you need to ring a bell in order to get in. The decor is what I assume is authentic, though this was my first visit to a Polish restaurant. The appetizer tray held some little potato (?) circles with 2 spreads - was was a salty cheese type of spread, the other was some sort of lard spread. The dinner menu has something for everyone and was difficult to choose an entree. The Highlander Special was very good, tons of food. The carrot slaw was good, though was a bit too bitter, not as sweet as other carrot slaw/salad I've had. Sampled the pierogi and turkey cutlet a la Szala's from others in our group. The pierogis were wonderful; the turkey cutlet was a bit on the dry side but interesting with the almond coating. When we return I'm going to just feast on pierogis with different fillings (sweet cheese!) The handwritten receipt was in Polish, had to divided it up based mainly on price of our entrees. A great experience, even for someone unfamiliar with Polish cuisine

“Abundance of food”
Reviewed October 22, 2010

This is a new restaurant near Mid-Way Airport in Chicago. We were a party of 11 people, and had the restaurant almost to ourselves on a Friday evening. The ambience was great. It is built like a hunting lodge in the Mts. of Southern Poland in the Carpathians. Having been to that part of the world it is quite authentic. The menu was excellent and had an attractive choice of authentic Polish dishes. The fruit filled perogi were wonderful.I had the borsht with meat roll, very good, as was the stuffed cabbage. Others in the party had the meat tartar, stuffed mushrooms, each order was sufficient for at least two people. One of those present thought the amount of food was extravagant, since no one finished the full portion. The service was friendly, although a bit slow since everything is cooked from scratch. There is plenty of parking across the road, and interestingly one has to pull a rope attached to a bell to enter. It is like going to a private home. We all had an enjoyable evening. The restaurant is kid friendly, again big portions.
