“Horrible!”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

I am reviewing Lao Sze Chuan in Chinatown. We made reservations for 9 for a Saturday night at 6 PM. We should have gone somewhere else when they said they didn't have our reservation, even though we could see it in their reservation book and had to point it out more than once.

The service - slow, disinterested, unhelpful - lousy. It was quite awhile before we were able to order drinks and appetizers; then had to beg for another round of drinks later on when we finally ordered our entrees. The food came out slowly - some at our table had to wait an additional 10 minutes for their entrees as others were getting cold at our table. The server just kept saying it would come.

The food - bland, grizzly, boring - lousy. We can get better Chinese take out in the suburbs. We ordered several appetizers and 9 different entrees. No one enjoyed/liked the food. The beef was grizzly & chewy, the seafood was bland, some entrees were served luke warm, crispy duck was soggy, etc. Nothing was completely inedible, but I've had better Chinese out of the frozen section of my local grocery store.

The ambiance - sterile, cold - lousy. To begin with, it was absolutely freezing in the restaurant because the door didn't close all of the way, and every time a group came or left, the door was left open a couple of inches. Many of us ate in our winter coats, as did many other patrons in the restaurant. The restaurant is very brightly lit.

I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone! Stay away!

“Yikes. Never again. Visitors - expect more from Chinatown than this.”
Reviewed January 15, 2013

I was excited to try this place, since all my chinese friends (including my girlfriend) said it was the best Chinese in town. We went between Christmas and New Year's, and boy were we in for a surprise.

After waiting in frigid weather for 20 minutes (they refused to let us wait in the entryway), we sat down and were excited to eat. The three of us ordered a pork dish, hot and sour soup, a chinese broccoli dish, and squid.

The hot and sour soup and the squid came without incident, and were pretty good. That's when the chaos began. We got a beef tripe dish that we hadn't ordered, and sent it back. The broccoli dish arrived after an extended delay, and was fine right up until the point we found the fingertip of a pink latex dishwashing glove in it.

Having lost our appetite, we got the check (after looking for our server for a good ten minutes) and found that not only had the beef tripe been included in the bill, so had a chicken dish. We argued, and the two dishes were removed, but the original pork dish (which we hadn't received) was included. Had to argue again to have that removed.

Unbeknownst to us, they were charging a mandatory 15% service fee during this period, and therefore to add insult to injury we weren't able to not leave a tip.

Two of the three people at the table were native Chinese speakers, and there was definitely no mix-up during the ordering. At least when they have a guaranteed tip, the entire staff of this restaurant could not give a damn. Slow service, careless order taking, debris in the food, and surly waitstaff - never again. Chef Tony or whatever his name is has gotten to big for his britches. Wake up - you're not that important, and if your restaurant continues to operate this way, people will walk away. There are a hundred restaurants just like it in Chinatown.

“Authentic Chinese Fun Atmosphere”
Reviewed December 27, 2012

Lao Sze Chuan Express by UIC on Taylor St is closed. However, I believe this listing is for Lao Sze Chuan in Chinatown at 2172 S Archer Ave. We read good reviews and they were true. The food was authentic and amazing. It was a very fun atmosphere. The man who sets the tables slammed the menus on the table everytime he set a new table. At first it startled us, but then we realized this must be his trademark. It became quite funny after a while. Then the owner talks in a very deep and booming voice. He loved our 7 year old daughter and gave her a lot of attention. He even hd her come over to another table to see his "magic trick". I'm not going to spoil the surprise. You'll have to go to find out what it is. You will enjoy the delicious food, unique flavors and fun atmosphere. Tip: If they give you a number, don't go too far. We were told 45 mins, but it was really only 20. If they call your number and you're not there, they move on to the next and "no food for you!". Also, if you pay to park, realize that the meter won't let you go past 9PM. We kept trying to put more money in and it wouldn't let us go past 9. We finally figured out that you don't have to pay past 9PM. OK, have fun and enjoy great food and fun at Lao Sze Chuan.

“The best of Chinatown!”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

The food is excellent and the service quick. However, a few pointers - weekends a busy, they do not take reservations hence be prepared for a long wait that could go up to an hour. Parking is sometimes a problem. But the food is worth the hassle.

“Authentic food”
Reviewed October 22, 2012

We go to Lao sze chuan at least 2 times a month, and no matter what time of the day you go it is packed and on Friday and Saturday nights there is a line out the door, with around 20 mins wait at an average. The service is prompt and the food comes quickly they give spicy cabbage and free tea which is a nice touch. We specially like Tony's three pepper chicken and the lalala beef , their sole fish spicy fillet is good as well. The hot and sour soup is delicious. The price is 10- 14 a dish and without alcohol for 2 people we spend around 30$ on an average here. It's worth a visit if you are in the area.
