Description: LE COLONIAL IS CELEBRATING 15 YEARS IN CHICAGO’S GOLD COAST AREA ON RUSH STREET. THIS NOTED UP-SCALE FRENCH-VIETNAMESE RESTAURANT TRANSPORTS GUESTS TO ANOTHER TIME AND PLACE, VIVIDLY RECAPTURING THE BEAUTY, ROMANCE AND SPIRIT OF 1920’S FRENCH COLONIAL SOUTHEAST ASIA. THE SECOND-FLOOR MAIN BAR, LOUNGE, AND TERRACE ARE ADORNED WITH PLUSH COUCHES, WOVEN RATTAN CHAIRS, AND POTTED PALMS. BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOS OF TURN OF THE CENTURY LIFE IN SAIGON SET THE STAGE FOR YOUR NEXT EVENT."LE COLONIAL IS AN ESCAPIST'S PARADISE, A CLEVERLY CRAFTED RE-CREATION OF THE CIVILIZED YET EXOTIC WORLD OF FRENCH INDOCHINA. HERE IN ITS TONY OAK STREET ENVIRONS, LE COLONIAL HAS ONE OF THE LOVELIEST DINING ROOMS IN THE CITY -- AND THE SECOND FLOOR LOUNGE IS A SULTRY, SEDUCTIVE COCKTAIL DESTINATION.”

Le Colonial has been on Rush Street for years but somehow my husband and I never got around to making reservations. I think the French-Vietnamese label was confusing. But, oh my! From the sedate décor (white wood trim, dark green walls, potted plants) to the jumping bar/lounge upstairs and the cute terrace on the 2nd floor, this place is really special! We have visited for my birthday, our anniversary and just because it's always a fabulous meal.

Not bad, there are much better options though. Very plain rice paper rolls. Good cocktails. Would not go back though

This was my third visit to Le Colonial and each time I return it gets better. The atmosphere is perfect to celebrate a special occasion and the food as well as the service are outstanding.
I can't wait to go back to Chicago just so I can dine here again.

“beautiful”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 12, 2013

I enjoyed everything about my experience at le Colonial. It's in a lovely, upscale part of Chicago (as a friend of mine informed me is colloquially referred to as the 'Viagra Triangle' - ask around and you'll learn why), across the street from Barney's NY and near the Astoria. The ambiance is truly colonial, and makes you feel transported to another time and place. The best part (as it should be with a restaurant) was the food. Interesting flavours, spices, and aromas, and a wide variety of options. We shared an appetizer of crispy vegetarian spring rolls (yum), and my dining companion had a salmon dish as an entrée. I dove in to my dish of tofu with broccoli and yams in a sumptuous curry broth and fragrant jasmine rice. My only regret is I can't have it again for dinner tonight as I've returned home!
