3* Chicago restaurant where the great and the good hang out ! Wonderful food but eye wateringly expensive ! Try Spiaggia Cafe for lunch and tip the barman for the gossip ! Great location on Michigan Avenue, nice spot for a Martini after a glam shopping trip!

“Go for the experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 24, 2012

This might have been the most fun we've ever had at dinner. Incredible flavors, combinations I'd never even think of doing in my kitchen (or be able to do in my kitchen), delightful wine and outstanding service. With that said - we could have flown from Chicago to L.A. for the same price. It is outrageously priced - as in no food is worth that amount of money priced.

If we tried to be cheap about it we might have gotten out of there for around $250. But we decided we were never coming back so we might as well truly enjoy it and not worry about the cost. I don't quite understand how you build a reputation on a meal that most people cannot afford to eat more than once.

It was an extravagant evening. And if you can afford a little extravagance, Spiaggia is an excellent place to do so.

“Overpriced and Underwhelming”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 19, 2012

Visited Chicago for a work trip, and took my husband along for a little getaway. We'd wanted to try Spiaggia for years, and were very excited to have this opportunity to do so. We were very disappointed.

The service upon arrival was warm and friendly, but a bit less so table-side. Our serving staff was adequate, but at a restaurant of this caliber and price, I expected outstanding. It was not.

The ambiance is nice, and the restaurant has a very pretty view of Lake Michigan. But, it did feel a bit more stuffy than was necessary. A restaurant can be lovely and fancy and fine dining, without being pretentious.

We first peered at the wine list, anxious to have something delicious to go with our fancy meal. Upon opening the book, husband nearly gasped out loud at the prices. We dine out a lot, and often at fine dining places, so wine prices that are 2-4 times retail rarely surprise us. But this list was at least 8 (in some cases, 10) times retail prices. It was insane. There were few bottles for under $100, with most being in the multiple hundred dollar range.

The food was very underwhelming as well. We each ordered a starter, a pasta dish, and a dessert. Though it was decent, it certainly did not live up to expectations, or price. My starter was bland, and pasta was so salty I couldn't finish it. My husband's food was better, but shamefully overpriced. At $30 for a starter, and $65 for pasta, I expected so, so much more. Dessert was good, but again nothing amazing.

This was one big disappointment for us. With so many other amazing places to try in Chicago, we'd certainly not recommend spending your time or money at Spiaggia.

“Dinner at Spiaggia”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 14, 2012 via mobile

Overrated. Generally, service was good but there was a pretentious air. We were given a poor table even though the restaurant was only a third full at any point during our dinner. Service was good but the food and wine list were very over priced. Food presentation was very good but portions were small. All in all it was really disappointing!

“Enjoyed an excellent meal in the Cafe”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 10, 2012

Spiaggia is a pricey and upscale restaurant but it has a separate cafe which is more modest, but with excellent food. I understand Spiaggia is the Obama's favorite restaurant but of course, he's out campaigning. Had the gnocchi -- delicious -- and a very small, but excellent filet. Not quite as exciting as we thought it would be. But, the restaurant had us with our appetizer -- burratta with fresh figs, some coarse salt, and a little balsamic vinaigrette. Incredible. Should have ordered it again for dessert.
