This restaurant doesn't look like the type that would be open for breakfast, and most of the breakfast business appears to be from guests staying at the Marriott Courtyard next door. The breakfast bar has fresh fruits, cereals, waffles, eggs, meats and cheese. The service is great. The chef will prepare eggs and omelets to order. Some nice features are that you place your order for hot food with the waitress and you don't have to stand in line or wait at a counter. Also, the waitress brings juice, water and coffee so you don't have to juggle cups or go back and forth through the buffet line. Everything is fresh and hot.

I would not recommend this restaurant. The staff was rude, unpleasant, and unaccommodating. We were guests of the hotel this restaurant is in, and were told that there were no more available reservations for the night. This was at 8:30pm and the restaurant was practically empty.. However, upon hearing this, we decided to do take-out and just eat up in the room. While we were waiting for our food, out of curiosity, I checked opentable to see if they were telling the truth. Of course not! There was an open reservation for 9pm and 945pm. Very unprofessional, and if the food wasn't already ordered, I would have left and never looked back. Since we already ordered, we waited the 20 minutes and when we finally received the food, needless to say it was not the best I've had. The salmon was overcooked, and the potatoes were burnt. The steak was very small. For the money, it was absolutely not worth it. Would not recommend to ANYONE.

AnywhereButHere23,

Thank you for the review and insight to the experience you had at Viand Bar & Kitchen. I want to apologize for the unsatisfactory experience you received upon your arrival. We are working on better equipping our staff with training and support on the reservation management software to ensure all of our guests can have a wonderful experience for any future reservations.

Please reach out if you are ever back in Chicago as this was not up to our expectations and standards for food quality and service and we would like to make it up to you. Until then, stay warm and we hope you are having a wonderful new year.

We were caught in a rain shower and sought shelter here. My, were we glad it rained. The wonderful staff was attentive and friendly even though we looked like drowned rats. We ordered the flourless chocolate cake and were delighted by this rich concoction. I'll be back. If the rest of their food is as good as that cake, this is not a spot to miss.

Thank Becky L

Dear Becky L,

We are really glad that you enjoyed the dessert when you happened upon us! Hopefully you will get to come back soon and try some of our other dishes, without the rainfall next time!

Viand is located in the lower lobby of a Courtyard Marriott, and the breakfast buffet looks exactly like what you will see in a lot of Marriott's lobby's for breakfast. The only problem is Viand charges $18 for it. I really wish I had taken a picture, it's identical to other Marriotts; powdered eggs, frozen potatoes, frozen sausage patties, tons of bread/Danish, plenty of beverages to choose from and a native concoction of potatoes, chorizo and cheese that actually wasn't too bad. Other than that, stupidly overpriced and remarkably subpar in an area with plenty of other choices.
The only positive was the staff, they were very attentive and very friendly, constantly offering refills and offering advice on local attractions.
So...for three of us we paid almost $50 for what is free at most Marriott hotels, and left with heartburn and feeling like crime victims. Can't speak for lunch/dinner but the breakfast is a definite pass. Should have gotten a bucket of popcorn at the Garrett's next door.

Usually the restaurant and bar at a hotel are hit or miss. Most of the time the bar is OK but the restaurant is just a place to get something to eat in a pinch. Viand is a hit in both areas. A great bar and a great restaurant both with excellent service. The food was top rate and the service was attentive but not smothering.
