First of all, you should take notice of the Route 66 stuff hanging on the walls -- Route 66 started at Jackson and Michigan (later it moved) and this place is roundabouts there -- right by the big, fabulously glorious train station with its great hall -- also not to be missed. So you can sense that this was the place to be, and on a Sunday morning it still is, lucky for us. First, they pass out food while you wait in line. Second, you can park your luggage inside while you eat. Third, they sell their coffee. Fourth, they serve your breakfast in a little skillet. Fifth, it's all about pancakes. Sixth, the bacon is faboo. Don't over-order though -- I sadly wasted half my order. Go small, go light. The portions are hangover-friendly.

Across the street from union station. The food is made from scratch and it was some of the better coffee found in the city. The service is slow, so dont come here in a time crunch. Our server was very nice and kept our drinks full while we waited. Route 66 starts here, so you really have to dine at lous for the nostalgia. Very busy he two hours we were there. Dont forget your greeted with homemade donuts...yum!

It was our first day on our 3 week drive from Chicago to LA, along Route 66 and after visiting the Sears Tower, we had lunch at LM's -because that's what your supposed to do. And were we glad that we did. It was every bit as good as the guidebooks promised and as good as we dared hope. The place was packed and noisy, but that only added to our authentic American Diner Experience.
We found a table for four and were immediately served with iced water - very welcome as the outside temperature was in the 80s & as we had some driving to do that afternoon, beer wasn't on the menu. We ordered a range of sandwiches and chips (crisps in the UK), all of which came with a side salad that would have sufficed on its own. My tuna sandwich was superb and the bite I stole of my friend's ham sandwich was almost as good. The lunch was accompanied with Cokes and rounded off with several cups of excellent coffee. All of the staff were friendly and very attentive and the cost was a pleasant surprise - very good value.
If there's a better way to begin a trip on "the highway that's the best", I don't know what it is, so please tell me.

Ate here during a layover while in Chicago. Very convenient location in downtown Chicago and less than a block from Union station. The traditional diner fare was great. Price was average. We were there before lunch but found the place lively and packed. Of all the places we had coffee in our three weeks in the US, this was the only one that actually had a good cup of coffee.

Located outside the Chicago Union Station, this diner is an icon in the area. As it was early, getting in was a breeze and it was nice to be greeted with a small donut. We enjoyed the pancakes and fresh squeezed juice, which was a nice kickstart to the day. You should definitely visit this eatery, even if you only have a 2 hour stopover.
