“Great way to kill time waiting on a train”
Reviewed August 15, 2013 via mobile

Across the street from union station. The food is made from scratch and it was some of the better coffee found in the city. The service is slow, so dont come here in a time crunch. Our server was very nice and kept our drinks full while we waited. Route 66 starts here, so you really have to dine at lous for the nostalgia. Very busy he two hours we were there. Dont forget your greeted with homemade donuts...yum!

“Every bit as good as promised”
Reviewed August 2, 2013

It was our first day on our 3 week drive from Chicago to LA, along Route 66 and after visiting the Sears Tower, we had lunch at LM's -because that's what your supposed to do. And were we glad that we did. It was every bit as good as the guidebooks promised and as good as we dared hope. The place was packed and noisy, but that only added to our authentic American Diner Experience.
We found a table for four and were immediately served with iced water - very welcome as the outside temperature was in the 80s & as we had some driving to do that afternoon, beer wasn't on the menu. We ordered a range of sandwiches and chips (crisps in the UK), all of which came with a side salad that would have sufficed on its own. My tuna sandwich was superb and the bite I stole of my friend's ham sandwich was almost as good. The lunch was accompanied with Cokes and rounded off with several cups of excellent coffee. All of the staff were friendly and very attentive and the cost was a pleasant surprise - very good value.
If there's a better way to begin a trip on "the highway that's the best", I don't know what it is, so please tell me.

“Convenient location”
Reviewed July 31, 2013

Ate here during a layover while in Chicago. Very convenient location in downtown Chicago and less than a block from Union station. The traditional diner fare was great. Price was average. We were there before lunch but found the place lively and packed. Of all the places we had coffee in our three weeks in the US, this was the only one that actually had a good cup of coffee.

“Quintessential diner experience in the heart of Chicago”
Reviewed July 30, 2013

Located outside the Chicago Union Station, this diner is an icon in the area. As it was early, getting in was a breeze and it was nice to be greeted with a small donut. We enjoyed the pancakes and fresh squeezed juice, which was a nice kickstart to the day. You should definitely visit this eatery, even if you only have a 2 hour stopover.

“Forget Wildberry. This is the place for your one Chicago breakfast.”
Reviewed July 28, 2013 via mobile

Part of the reason that we were so unimpressed with Wildberry may have been that we'd had such a great experience at Lou Mitchell's. Here, the multigrain pancakes were nicely done, with a side of crispy bacon and freshly squeezed grapefruit juice.

But what makes Lou Mitchell's memorable is that it has character. If you can, sit at the counter, where the regulars hang out. The corner at the front is absolutely ideal for four people if you can get it. And you'll be able to get to know the waitresses, managers, and busboys like you never would at a regular table or booth. The guy sitting next to us ? who, it turns out, lives across the street ? told us that our waitress was 84 years old (!), works a full shift every week, and goes to baseball games whenever she can. Learning that alone is worth the price of admission!
