“Best Chinese food in Chicago”

After many stays at the Peninsula we finally at here this last visit. We will definitely be going back. Service was top notch and the food flavors outstanding. We both had Cantonese style fish entrees and they were delicious.

“Truly excellent meal”
Reviewed April 29, 2014

My wife, daughter and 3 of her college friends ate at Shanghai Terrace on Saturday night. We thought the food was uniformly excellent as was the service. Our waiter was extremely helpful in suggesting a variety of Dim Sum appetizers and main dishes (without over-ordering and offering items that were not on the menu). The beef tenderloin with XO sauce was amazing. The restaurant itself is beautiful and you really feel special dining there (without feeling intimidated). We look forward to returning.

“Excellent Chinese Restaurant in an Awesome Location”
Reviewed April 28, 2014

This is our favorite Chinese restaurant. We ate here about a year ago and ordered similar dishes since we liked it so well. The golden shrimp is very light and flavorful. Also, we ordered the crispy duck, shanghai fried noodle, and seasonal jade vegetables. All of the entrees were extremely high quality and well prepared. The duck is juicy but not too greasy. The jade vegetables are very unique, plentiful, and appropriately seasoned. We wished we knew of a similar high quality Chinese restaurant at home. Finally, the service is very attentive but not intrusive. As a Peninsula hotel restaurant, it fits very well into their offerings of high quality food and service. We plan to return again.

“Hidden Gem in a Big City”
Reviewed April 3, 2014

I wanted to try this restaurant after reading some reviews on Tripadvisor. I am so glad that we did. Our reservation wasn't showing up on their computer system, so we were worried we wouldn't be able to be seated, but they seated us promptly at an intimate table in a cozy area.

Our waitress was very pleasant and helpful in offering her explanations of certain dishes and preferences. My husband and I love duck, so he chose the crispy duck with Asian spices. I chose the Sea Bass, even though I had some the evening before.... I knew the preparation would be different, and hey, it's sea bass, which we never get in Montana.

The duck was wonderful, crispy skin on the outside and the five spice seasoning was just right, not over powering the duck. My husband fell in love with it the first bite. My Sea Bass was also wonderful and had layering of flavors that made each bite a new experience. The Sea Bass had been steamed, then topped with a savory blend of fermented black beans, which were also spicy, and some ginger infused greens, with a sesame oil reduction. This lay on top of a bed of Bok Choy. Both were served with a side of steamed rice.

Both dishes were very reasonable in price. Our waitress was very sweet, and was willing to spend a little time answering our many questions. (We chatted her up quite a bit because the restaurant reminded us of our visit to China in 2012. We even think that she and I may be distantly related... but maybe it was just wishful thinking) We had a great time at this restaurant and we both recommend it.

Getting to the restaurant is also an adventure, as you wind your way through the Peninsula Hotel to find the restaurant. The hotel is beautiful to say the least, and it seems you are in another world. A most enjoyable evening.
