“Not a disappointment- Really!!!”
Reviewed October 7, 2013

My husband made reservations here, and I was skeptical because the "best" places in town are often overrated. Well, I was very pleasantly surprised by the food and service here!! We were celebrating our anniversary, and were seated in a booth (highly recommended for romance) and Liz greeted us with a smile and a suggestion to take our time (welcome remark). From there it just got better. We first ordered Ceviche which was very good ( We share everything, by the way). We had decided to order each course as we finished the prior course and it worked out perfectly! Crab Bisque was amazing! The Stone Crabs were next and great! Our entree was the Grouper, perfectly prepared, and a special that night. For dessert,we had the BEST Key Lime Pie!
We would come back in a heartbeat!

“pricey but delicious”
Reviewed October 7, 2013

Very expensive place to eat, but the food is so good. I had the fish (mahi mahi) tacos and my husband had the grouper.

“excellent food, poor service”
Reviewed October 6, 2013

Would have had a super-long wait for a table so opted for front, only-the-ledge service - wait staff is overwhelmed in this area in taking care of customers in a timely basis. Now for the good news - the food is excellent. I ordered a pork chop - this turned out to be a sensational extra-thick cut that was cooked just-about-perfect (I was surprised, in light of the thickness). Excellently seasoned and tender. I paired this with sauteed spinach - also very good.

“Favorite dinner while in Chicago”
Reviewed October 6, 2013

This place was our favorite on this trip to Chicago. Even though we had reservations, we did have to wait a bit. Our server, Nick, made up for the wait, making the experience wonderful. Nick made great recommendations as we were happy with the stone crab, our bone-in rib eye steak, the delicious sides of Lyonnaise potatoes and the roasted sweet corn. We enjoyed his suggestion of the key lime pie. Fun people watching and atmosphere.

“Poor service and attitude”
Reviewed October 6, 2013

From the chaos in the bar/waiting area and the affected aloofness of the maitre d', to the awful service in the cramped banquette area of the main dining room, we found this all so unpleasant an experience that we left before ordering (but after having spent well over an hour waiting for our table -long beyond our reservation time- waiting far too long for our drinks in the standing room only cramped waiting room area (to call it a bar area is to misrepresent the true function of the crowded space) and then waiting for our order to be taken, long after we had been given our menus and effectively been abandoned by our waiter to a combination of very needy, very loud and very near (and we mean very near) neighboring table guests and wherever else he disappeared to for extended periods). To be clear, we didn't eat dinner here, we walked out. Everything about the place smacks of poor service, poor attitude and licensed use of another restaurant's name and (largely but not completely) menu content and formula. Being from Miami, and very familiar with the original (and differently owned) Joe's, we understood the component parts of the theater that is Joe's, but here, in the Chicago version, the whole thing appears contrived and silly. The maitre d' adopts the Miami version's aloofness and self-importance but without the management of the throngs of guests clamoring for a table (this place takes reservations - why the drama)? The waiting area is impossibly overcrowded - nowhere to stand or sit (most tables are taken by those without reservations choosing to eat at the high tops) as if one is waiting for a store's doors to open for a Black Friday sale, with everyone clustered about the entrance to the dining area hoping that their name will be called. Drinks, when orders are placed with an overworked and harried bar waitress, take too long to arrive. In our case our drinks were not served by the time our names were called for seating. When we swam upstream through the crowd to the maitre d' to answer the name call and asked that our drinks, when ready, be brought to our table, we were refused and told that "we do ask that you settle your bar tab before being seated" - the gratuitous "do" once again emphasizing the haughty silliness of the operation. Back we were sent to the bowels of the staging area to await the arrival of the drinks, and then the fun of carrying them, without spilling them, as we again worked our way through the obstacle course of folks waiting for a table. Inside the dining room, we were sat at an awful end banquette, adjoining a large round table whose table backing and ledge forms a barrier wall that abutted the face of one of us and whose seating on the other end is within three inches of the other one of us. The tiny table, leaden with plates and bowls for unordered stone crabs (early October so if ordered frozen since May when they were last legal to be caught in the Gulf), has barely room for the bread plate and water glass, let alone bread or food. The waiter aggressively pitches the overpriced specials and disappears for a very long time period. When he at last returns, his focus is on the newly arrived (and quite difficult) table of six which has now been seated just beyond the ledge, leaving us to sit and stew. When he finally remembers our presence, he leans over the ledge with an arm dangling down towards us to say "sorry guys, what would you like", we told him that we would be finishing the drinks we had brought to the table with us and would be leaving shortly. The thought of sitting through a full meal at this place was now not very appealing to us, He apologized "for offending us" and that concluded our evening at Joe's Chicago - but for the struggle to exit through the crowds still waiting for a table. We had a great dinner elsewhere and were happy with our decision to leave. There are so many very good seafood and steakhouses in Chicago-we saw no need to put up with the Joe's Chicago experience any further.
